ABILENE, Texas - After taking the previous two meetings, the Lobos could not get the season sweep in a 65-54 loss to McMurry on Saturday.
Sully fell behind 7-0 out of the gate but answered with the next three on a
Keona Loftis free throw and
Vania Hampton jumper to trail 7-3 at 6:26.
A low scoring first quarter saw a total of six points the rest of the way with McMurry outscoring the Lobos 5-1 for a 12-4 lead heading to the second.
Alexis Carmosino cut it to six with a layup after a
Teresa Quintana steal for a 12-6 game at 8:57 to open the second quarter.
The War Hawks quickly doubled their lead with a 6-0 run over the next 1:39 for an 18-6 advantage.
Sully trailed by as many as 14 in the second but immediately cut it to eight with a 6-0 run.
Ashley Nunez started with a jumper before Carmosino added a layup and a jumper to trail 21-13 at 3:10.
McMurry finished the first half with an 8-3 run for a 29-16 lead heading to the break.
The deficit for the Lobos hovered in double digits for most of the third quarter until Nunez hit back-to-back jumpers to make it 44-35 with 1:34 left in the third.
The War Hawks pushed it back to 11 on a layup, but Hampton finished third quarter scoring with a pair of free throws for a 46-37 McMurry lead heading to the fourth.
Loftis opened the fourth with a jumper to cut it to seven just 24 seconds in.
Both sides traded the next five baskets before the War Hawks used that to start a 7-0 run to lead 57-42 at 5:02.
Still down 15 with 4:14 left, Carmosino sank a triple to start a 7-0 run. Nunez and
Cassie Hogan then connected on back-to-back jumpers to trail 59-51 with 2:58 left.
Sully was able to get within eight one more time down the stretch, but McMurry ultimately prevailed for a 65-54 win.
Nunez led all Lobos with a season-high 18 points, adding four rebounds and three steals.
Carmosino was a rebound shy of a double-double with nine to go with 16 points.
The Lobos stand at 7-11 on the season and 5-4 in ASC play. The War Hawks improve to 1-13 and 1-9.
Sully next travels to Belton for a Thursday, February 18 contest against Mary Hardin-Baylor.
