ABILENE, Texas - Volleyball fell 3-1 and 3-1 in straight matches on Tuesday against McMurry to open their spring 2021 season.
Match One - MCM 3 SRSU 1
(
25-16, 19-25, 14-25, 21-25)
Sully opened the first set on a 6-0 run to break things open early.
Loren Garcia got her first kill of the set to make it 2-0 before
Danielle Gomez added three straight service aces for a 5-0 lead. An attack error by McMurry accounted for the final point of the run for a 6-0 lead.
After the War Hawks got on the board,
Loren Garcia came up with another kill and then a
Tatyana Colon ace for an 8-1 advantage.
McMurry proceeded to cut it to four with a 4-1 run but was quickly down seven again after
Mia Bella Ruiz and
Daniella Garcia back-to-back kills coupled with
Annika Canaba's service ace made it a 12-5 lead.
The Lobos were able to sustain the lead and balloon it to 18-8 as part of a 5-0 run due to four straight attack errors and finally a kill by
Loren Garcia.
Sully took their largest lead of the first set after
Loren Garcia and Canaba put up kills that were followed by a Gomez service ace for a 21-10 advantage.
McMurry came back with the next four, but the Lobos finished the set with a 4-2 run that was finished by a Canaba kill for a 25-16 win.
The War Hawks started set two with a 4-0 run but ran into a 5-0 Sully answer with two kills from Canaba, one each from Daniella and
Loren Garcia, and a service ace from Colon for a 5-4 advantage.
Set two saw four more ties and two lead changes before the Lobos upped their lead to three at 14-11 and eventually 15-12.
McMurry came back with a 6-1 run to take a 18-16 advantage as set two headed towards a conclusion.
Sully was able to tie it after a service error from the War Hawks and a Canaba service ace for an 18-18 score.
McMurry responded with two unanswered before
Isabella Ruiz cut it back to one with a kill.
The War Hawks were able to best the Lobos in the final goings of set two with a 5-0 run for a 25-19 win.
McMurry opened set three with a 4-0 run to set the pace.
A kill from Canaba and a bad set from the War Hawks made it a 4-2 game, but the War Hawks used a 7-2 run to lead 11-4.
The War Hawks had an answer for every attempt the Lobos made in set three, never allowing Sully closer than five again to take it 25-14.
Sully erased a quick 1-0 deficit with two kills from
Isabella Ruiz and a ball handling error for a 3-1 lead in set four.
McMurry upped their lead to two with a 5-1 run thereafter.
Canaba and
Daniella Garcia quickly tied it 6-6 with back-to-back kills.
The War Hawks then went on a 5-1 run to lead 12-8.
Colon's kill from
Danielle Gomez cut it to three, but a 5-2 McMurry run upped their advantage to 17-11.
The Lobos made a strong comeback with a 5-1 run to cut it to two.
Loren Garcia added two kills and Colon had a service ace to help trim it to 18-16.
Sully never ceased in their efforts in the closing serves but could never get closer than two the rest of the set as the War Hawks took the set 25-21 for a 3-1 match victory.
Canaba led all Lobos with 12 kills and was second in digs with 10, behind only Colon who had 13.
Danielle Gomez had a game-high 13 assists.
Match Two - MCM 3 SRSU 1
(18-25, 13-25,
25-20, 25-27)
The Lobos got their first point of the match on a service error before McMurry went on a 3-0 run for a 4-1 lead.
Canaba then came up with a kill off a Moya assist to cut it to two and start a 3-1 run that was finished with back-to-back attack errors from the War Hawks to trail 5-4.
McMurry proceeded to break things open with a 10-0 run to lead 15-4.
With the War Hawks now leading 18-6, the Lobos were able to cut it to eight with a 7-3 run.
Back down 11, Sully inched closer with a 5-0 run. It was started with three attack errors by McMurry and finished with kills by
Isabella Ruiz and
Daniella Garcia for a 24-18 score.
McMurry finished set one on a kill to take it with a 25-18 score.
Set two saw a quick 2-0 lead for the War Hawks before Canaba notched a kill to trail 2-1.
Both sides traded the next five points for a 5-3 McMurry lead. The War Hawks came up with the next two to double their lead to 6-3.
Loren Garcia answered with a kill and then a had a service ace for a 6-5 score.
Like in set one, the War Hawks rattled off another 10-0 run to take a 16-5 advantage.
The Lobos came back with a 4-0 run that included kills from
Isabella Ruiz and
Kyleigh Mulanax for a 16-9 score.
Up 19-11, McMurry used a 5-0 run to lead 24-11 and eventually went up 2-0 with a 25-13 set two win.
Sully was able to take an early set three lead with a 7-3 run at the start. Canaba and
Mia Bella Ruiz each had two kills during the run.
The Lobos were able to keep the lead but saw it shrink to one with a 10-9 advantage.
Sully was able to hold the lead and expand it to four with a proceeding 4-1 run. Mulanax and Canaba added kills before it was finished with a
Tatyana Colon kill for a 14-10 score.
McMurry twice cut it to two, but the Lobos were able to go up six with a 4-0 run to lead 20-14.
Sully was able to hold the lead down the stretch, never letting the War Hawks within three as they took set three with back-to-back kills from Mulanax and Iabella Ruiz for a 25-20 score.
After a Mulanax kill made it 1-0, McMurry went on a 5-0 run for the four-point advantage.
Canaba started a small 3-0 answer with a kill to cut it to 5-4.
After the War Hawks upped their lead to three, back-to-back attack errors from McMurry started a 4-0 run for the Lobos. The run was finished with a service ace from Canaba and a
Daniella Garcia kill for a 9-7 lead for Sully.
The War Hawks answered with a 4-0 run to lead 12-10 but quickly saw things tied after a ball handling error and kill from Canaba.
Down 14-13, the Lobos used a 4-0 run with two kills from Canaba, one from
Mia Bella Ruiz, and a
Faith Herrera service ace for a 17-14 advantage.
McMurry quickly flipped the script with a 4-1 run for an 18-18 tie.
Canaba ended the run with a kill for a 19-18 lead.
After the War Hawks tied things with a kill,
Loren Garcia and Mulanax came back with kills of their own for a 21-19 lead.
A Sully attack error trimmed their lead to one before another
Loren Garcia kill and a bad McMurry set put them ahead 23-20.
The War Hawks came back with a kill and a service ace to again trail by one.
A McMurry service error then put the Lobos a point away from forcing a set five at 24-22.
The War Hawks used back-to-back kills for a 24-24 tie.
Isabella Ruiz again put the Lobos a point away from a win with kill for a 25-24 score.
McMurry was able to regroup and score the final three points for a 27-25 set four win and a 3-1 match victory.
Canaba finished with team-highs of 13 kills and 22 digs. She also had 10 assists
Moya finished with a team-best 18 assists.
Sully falls to 0-2 on the season and 0-2 in conference play. The War Hawks improve to 2-0 and 2-0.
The Lobos next travel to Abilene on Friday, February 19 for a doubleheader with Hardin-Simmons.
