BROWNWOOD, Texas - Women's hoops ended a three-game losing streak with an 84-79 road win over Howard Payne.
"We had a turbulent game and have to work on being more consistent," said head coach
Katie Novak. "But I'm proud of the way we bounced back after a couple of poor defensive quarters to finish strong.
Alexis Carmosino was really a fire for us and stepped up to battle when we needed her."
First Quarter
Alexis Carmosino opened the game with a layup before
Teresa Quintana nailed a triple for a 5-0 lead. Carmosino later upped it to 7-2 with a jumper as Sully held a lead the entire first quarter. They finished the first on a 10-2 run to lead 26-13 going to the second.
Ashley Nunez scored the final eight with a layup and a pair of three-pointers to lead by 13.
Second Quarter
The Lobos led by 15 on a pair of occasions early in the second but saw the advantage cut to 36-32 after a 10-2 HPU run. Sully finished the half on a 7-3 run to lead 43-35 at the break.
Third Quarter
Howard Payne took their first lead of the game with an 11-2 run to start the third and eventually upped it to as many as six. Down 60-54, the Lobos scored the final four of the quarter from
Vania Hampton to trail 60-58 going to the fourth.
Fourth Quarter
Lauren Lusk gave Sully their next lead with a layup for a 61-60 advantage early. Hampton later upped it to six with a three-pointer and a layup for a 75-69 lead with just over two minutes left. HPU cut it to two with under a minute left, but the Lobos finished the game on a 5-2 run for the 84-79 win.
Stats
Carmosino led the Lobos with 19 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. She also tied a team-high three steals.
Hampton finished with 14 points, eight rebounds and three steals.
Both Nunez and
Marley Rokas added 12 points.
The Lobos improve to 6-4 on the season and 2-3 in conference. Howard Payne falls to 2-6 and 1-4.
Sully next takes on East Texas Baptist in Marshall on Thursday, December 16.
