KERRVILLE, Texas - Women's hoops opened the ASC/SCAC Crossover in Kerrville with a 71-52 win over St. Thomas (TX).
"We are figuring each other out a little more each game," said head coach
Katie Novak. "I liked today that we relied on our defense to set the tone. It was also a great rebounding effort by us as a team."
First Quarter
Sully's first lead came with an 8-0 run for a 12-7 advantage.
Alexis Carmosino gave the Lobos the lead at 9-7 with a layup.
Keona Loftis then converted a layup before a
Vania Hampton free throw made it 12-7. Their largest margin of the first came on a pair of
Marley Rokas free throws to lead 16-8 before it went to the second with an 18-12 score.
Second Quarter
Ashley Nunez made it a 10-point lead on a three-point play of a layup and a free throw to make it 27-17. The Lobos finished the half on an 8-2 run with a three from Loftis and layups from Nunez and
Alyssa Ramlochan for a 41-24 lead at the break.
Third Quarter
The Celts spent most of the third on an 11-4 run to cut it to 45-35 with around 3:30 left. The Lobos had an answer every time UST got within 10 and took a 53-39 lead to the fourth after a late Hampton layup.
Fourth Quarter
Sully scored the first eight to take a 22-point lead with Rokas starting and ending the run with jumpers.
Teresa Quintana and Nunez later sank back-to-back triples for a 67-41 lead with under four minutes left. The Celts spent the remainder of the game with an 11-4 run, but the Lobos did plenty of damage throughout for the 71-52 win.
Hampton scored a game-high 21 points on 7-of-19 shooting with six rebounds and three steals.
Rokas had 14 points with four rebounds, three assists and a steal.
Carmosino scored 10 points with three assists, and tied Ramlochan and Loftis for a game-high 9 rebounds.
The Lobos outrebounded the Celts 56-30 with a 21-5 advantage offensively.
Sully improves to 5-1 on the season and stays 1-1 in conference. The Celts drop to 2-3.
The Lobos conclude the ASC/SCAC Crossover on Sunday with a 2:00 p.m. tip against Schreiner.
