ALPINE, Texas - Women's hoops was bested 58-57 on Saturday afternoon by University of the Ozarks in the season and conference opener at Gallego Center.
"Today we didn't come prepared as a team to give our best effort," said head coach
Katie Novak. "We have a lot to learn and we get the chance to bounce back quickly as we hit the road again tomorrow."
First Quarter
The Lobos got out to a big lead out of the gate with a 12-0 run.
Vania Hampton scored four of the first 12 and capped the run with a triple. The Eagles scored the next seven before Sully finished the first quarter on an 8-2 run to lead 20-9 going to the second.
Alyssa Ramlochan started with a three before
Alexis Carmosino knocked down a jumper and
Ashley Nunez finished with a three-pointer for the eleven-point advantage.
Second Quarter
Ozarks began the second with an 11-2 run to cut it to a 23-20 deficit. The Lobos then upped it back to seven with two free throws and a jumper from Carmosino. Scoring came at a premium in the second with only a triple from the Eagles and a
Keona Loftis buzzer-beater for a 29-23 Sully lead at the half.
Third Quarter
A 9-0 run from the Eagles gave them their first lead at 32-31 and they eventually stretched it to 35-31. Ramlochan answered with a pair of free throws before Nunez hit another triple for a 36-35 lead. Sully eventually grew their advantage to 42-37 with a 5-0 run.
Caitlyn Corley and Nunez started with back-to-back jumpers before Loftis sank a pair from the free throw line. The lead was soon cut to one until
Kayla James finished the third with a jumper for a 44-41 lead going to the fourth.
Fourth Quarter
The Eagles opened the final period with first seven for a 48-44 advantage. Sully continually cut into their lead and retook it with a Carmosino triple to lead 57-56 late in the fourth. Ozarks answered with a jumper their next time down the floor and neither team found the bottom of the net again in a 58-57 win for the Eagles.
Carmosino led the Lobos with 15 points and added eight rebounds.
Hampton and Ramlochan led the game with 11 rebounds each. Hampton also added 10 points.
The Lobos begin their season 0-1 and 0-1 in conference. Ozarks moves to 2-1 and 1-1.
Sully next takes on Texas Lutheran in a non-conference game on Monday, November 15 in Seguin.
