Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's hoops outlasts Ozarks in conference opener #SRSU | #ASChoops | #d3hoops

ALPINE, Texas - Men's hoops led from 4-2 through the remainder of the game and fought off a late push in a 64-59 win over Ozarks to start the conference season.

"It's always positive to fight for a win in this conference, especially with it being our second game of the year," said head coach Xavier Webb. "It was good to see us grind out and dampen the fires of a late run from Ozarks. Assistant Coach Patrick Mound did a great job getting us ready with his scouting. Our guys were able to lock into the defensive keys we put in place for the game. We're looking forward to building off this game going into our three-game stretch in six days."

First Half
Ozarks opened scoring with a jumper before a 9-2 answer put the Lobos ahead. Larry Morrison started with a jumper and Trey Nelson then hit back-to-back jumpers. His second came with a free throw after being fouled on the make and converted from the line. Gabe Sanchez finished the run with a layup to lead by seven. Sanchez later upped the lead to 10 for Sully's first double-digit lead of the game. They eventually got their advantage as high at 18 with an 11-1 run before settling on a 34-19 lead at the break.

Second Half
The Eagles cut it to 11 with a 10-6 start to the second half. Sully looked to have the game in check with an 11-1 run to lead 56-35 midway through. Ozarks then went on a 22-3 run to trail 59-57 with just under three minutes left. Julian Paredes converted a layup and was fouled to setup a successful three-point play to lead 62-57 with just over two minutes left. Scoring fell silent until the Eagles cut it to 62-59 in the final minute. Jake Lopez and Morrison each made the first of a pair of free throws in the final seconds to help solidify the 64-59 win.

Sanchez led the game with 17 points and had seven boards.

Morrison tied a game-high nine rebounds and added six points.

Nelson finished with 14 points.

Sully evens their season record to 1-1 and is 1-0 in conference. The Eagles are 0-4 and 0-2.
