Jackson, Mississippi - The Lobos come away with a win far away from Alpine against the Belhaven Blazers. This marks their first win in the New Year and stops their two game losing streak. This is their 4th win and a 4 game winning streak in the 6 game series history against the Blazers
A strong 1st quarter that yielded with 19 points and an equally strong closing 4th quarter contributing to 20 points sealed the win in the end following. It was a tight affair in the 2nd, 3rd quarters, and well into the 4th but the Lobos were able to hold on for the win.
Vania Hampton led all scorers for the night with 20 and tallied 5 boards as well. Followed up by
Keona Loftis with 12 and 5.
Kaylee Martinez recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 boards.
The game was tied with 12 seconds to go in the 3rd quarter but a late foul on a fast break attempt on
Keona Loftis put her on the line to push the Lobos into a 2 point lead heading into the final quarter. From there, the Lobos ended up holding on to a narrow win despite burgeoning their lead by 10 twice in the 4th.
Things did get tight towards the end. After several strong defensive sequence, with 37 seconds left the Blazers cut the lead to 3 off a trip to the free throw line from Sydney Martin. However, the Lobos focused on closing the game out as the time was running out. A made free throw from
Ashley Nunez after a quick foul from the Blazers made it a two possession game. The Blazers rushed down and attempted a 3-pointer but it was corralled by Ashley Roberts who was subsequently fouled with 15 seconds left. She sunk her two free throws to put Sully up by 6 and in effect end the game.
This win brings them to 3-6 on the season. The Lobos remain in Jackson, Mississippi to face Millsaps College tomorrow January 8th. The following game in Pineville, LA against the Wildcats of Louisiana College has been postponed as of now.
