Lobos fall 60-50 in close contest with Hardin-Simmons #SRSU | #ASChoops | #d3hoops

ALPINE, Texas - Women's basketball opened their home season at the Gallego Center on Thursday, falling 60-50 to the Hardin-Simmons Cowgirls.

The Lobos used the first three minutes of the game to take a 6-0 lead on three straight layups from Teresa Quintana, Cassie Hogan, and Vania Hampton.

HSU quickly tied the game on back-to-back triples before Hampton gave Sully an 8-6 lead midway through the first quarter.

The Cowgirls spent the next few minutes on a 9-0 run to lead 15-8 with under three minutes left in the first.

Ashley Nunez capped first quarter scoring with a jumper for a 15-10 HSU lead heading to the second.

The Cowgirls began the second quarter on a 6-0 run over the first three minutes for a 21-10 advantage.

Sully would cut it to nine on a pair of occasions, but HSU eventually upped their lead to 29-16 with two minutes left in the half.

Kaylee Martinez and Alexis Carmosino combined for the final four points of the half on a layup and jumper for a 29-20 Cowgirls lead at the break.

Martinez opened the third with a free throw and later Carmosino hit a jumper to cut the deficit to six early in the third.

HSU responded with a pair of free throws and a jumper to go back up 10 with just over 7:00 left in the third.

The Lobos trimmed it to seven twice but eventually trailed 42-32 heading to the fourth.

Martinez opened up another quarter with a bucket to trail by eight in the first minute of the final period.

Sully would twice again get within eight, but the Cowgirls and Lobos each finished with 18 points in the final quarter for a 60-50 HSU win.

Hampton finished with a team-high 10 points and was one rebound shy of a double-double with nine.

Martinez came away with 10 rebounds, seven points and four steals.

Quintana and Carmosino each provided nine points.

The Lobos fall to 3-8 on the season and 1-1 in ASC play. The Cowgirls improve to 6-3 and 1-2.

Sully next plays host to the McMurry War Hawks on Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. tip at the Gallego Center.
