ALPINE- Men's basketball secured a Friday spot in the ASC Semifinals with a 65-54 win over Louisiana College Thursday night at the Gallego Center.
With the win, the Lobos will face LeTourneau at 7:30 p.m. Friday for the right to advance to the ASC Championship game.
Jake Lopez put the Lobos on the board less than two minutes in for a 2-0 lead.
The Wildcats came back with four in a row for their first lead before a
Tristen Licon triple and
B.J. Hollis layup put the Lobos up 7-4 with 16:33 left in the first half.
Sul Ross was able to extend their lead to 10-6 after a
Logan Dixon Layup, but LC answered with an 8-0 run to go ahead 14-10 with 12:12 remaining.
The Lobos tied the game 16-16 but wouldn't take their next lead until a
Cailen Bond layup with 7:09 left in the first half for a 20-19 advantage.
A triple put the Wildcats ahead 22-20 their next time down the floor, but an ensuing 7-0 Sul Ross run put the Lobos up five with 4:53 until the break. Licon and Dixon started the run with back-to-back layups and Bond finished the quick run with a triple.
LC put the next two on the board with free throws before Licon finished first half scoring with a layup for a 29-24 lead at the half.
Sul Ross got out to a quick 7-0 run to start the second half. Dixon started with a jumper and Licon scored the next five on a three-pointer and later two free throws for a 36-34 lead at 17:46.
The Wildcats got it back to six points twice over the next to 1:34 but found themselves down 42-32 with 15:22 left after Licon and Bond jumpers.
LC did not go away, quickly cutting the deficit to two on a 10-2 run at 12:20.
A small 8-2 run got the lead back to 52-45 for the Lobos. Dixon started with a three-point play after being fouled on a layup and hitting the free throw.
Aaron Anderson then came up clutch off the bench with a triple from beyond the arc. Licon later finished the run with a jumper for a 52-45 advantage with 9:29 left.
The Wildcats proved formidable throughout with an immediate 6-1 response for a 53-51 score at 5:23.
Sul Ross also proved to always have an answer for LC with an 8-0 run to go up 61-51. This run saw four different scorers with buckets coming from Hollis, Lopez, Licon, and Bond for the 10-point lead with 1:44 remaining.
The Wildcats got to within seven, but Licon and Bond each went 2-for-2 at the line down the stretch to advance to the ASC semis with a 65-54 win over Louisiana College.
Licon finished the night with a game-high 22 points to go with eight rebounds.
Dixon notched a tournament double-double with 10 points and 10 boards.
Bond added 15 points and eight rebounds.
The ASC Tournament continues Friday at the Gallego Center with a pair of ASC Semifinals games. East Texas Baptist and UT Dallas are the first game of the night at 5:00. The Lobos and Yellowjackets of LeTourneau finish the night at 7:30.
