Lady Lobos keep tournament hopes alive with 62-57 win over Concordia #SRSU | #BrandEm | #ASChoops

ALPINE- Women's basketball kept their ASC Tournament hopes alive Thursday with a 62-57 win over visiting Concordia.

The Lady Lobos enter the final day of the season a full-game behind the Tornados for the final spot in the tournament. A Sully win over Mary Hardin-Baylor and a Concordia loss to Howard Payne would send the Lady Lobos to the tournament over the Tornados through a tiebreaker scenario.

Concordia started the game on a 13-2 run before Sully answered with five of their own for a 13-7 score at 2:18. Jocelyne Roque started the quick run with a layup. Martinez later added two free throws and Saucedo finished with a 1-for-2 trip from the line.

The Tornados responded with a 5-0 run to go up 10, but Roque ended first quarter scoring with a layup for an 18-10 Concordia advantage heading to the second.

The Lady Lobos cut the deficit to one with a 9-1 run to start the second quarter. Chandre Nunez scored the first five for Sully with a layup and a triple before Roque and Addison Jenkins converted back-to-back layups for a 20-19 score at 6:05.

The Tornados then upped their lead to six with a 5-0 run for a 25-19 lead with 5:17 left in the first half.

The Lady Lobos took their first lead of the game on a 9-2 run that was capped by a Maria Maldonado triple with 35 seconds left for a 28-27 lead.

The final bucket of the half came on a layup from Concordia as they took a slim 29-28 lead to the break.

Sully's first lead of the second half came just 24 seconds in on a trip to the line by Roque. After sinking her first to tie the game, Jackie Saucedo rebounded the miss on the second and put it back up for a 31-29 lead.

After a quick tie from the Tornados, Maldonado gave the Lady Lobos a three-point lead on a triple at 8:14.

Concordia tied the game twice after that but eventually trailed 42-38 at 4:41 after two Saucedo free throws and an Ashley Nunez layup.

Sully extended their lead to five on three occasions in the final three minutes of the third and a took a 48-43 lead to the fourth.

The Tornados quickly tied things with a 5-0 run but trailed again after Chandre Nunez's turnaround jumper at 7:23 put the Lady Lobos ahead 50-48.

Concordia responded with a free throw and later a layup to take a 51-50 lead. Sully came back with a Maldonado triple at 6:21 and a Chandre jumper at 4:07 to put the Lady Lobos up 55-51.

Both sides proved to have answers for each other as the Tornados tied the game 55-55 at 3:18 on back-to-back layups.

Chandre and Maldonado used the same formula for another four-point lead but this time in reverse. Nunez first broke the tie with a layup before Maldonado's layup at 1:50 to give Sully a 59-55 advantage. That score would hold until Roque stepped to the line with 20.9 left and sank a pair of free throws for a 61-55 score to end a 6-0 run.

Concordia cut the deficit to four with 11.3 left but fell to the Lady Lobos in a 62-57 final.

Chandre Nunez came away with game highs of 18 points and 14 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season.

Saucedo finished with double-digit rebounds for the third time in four games after bringing down 11.

Maldonado finished with 12 points, seven rebounds, and a game-high five assists.

Roque also scored in double digits with 10 points.

Sully improves to 7-17 on the season and 5-10 in conference play. The Tornados fall to 9-15 and 6-9.
