Nunez surpasses 1,000 points in collegiate career in loss to Hardin-Simmons #SRSU | #BrandEm | #ASChoops

ALPINE- Senior guard/forward Chandre Nunez surpassed 1,000 points in her collegiate career Saturday in a 76-56 loss to Hardin-Simmons at the Gallego Center.

The San Antonio native needed 21 points to hit the 1,000-point plateau. She finished with 22 after putting up a three-pointer with 1:07 left in the game.

The Cowgirls broke out to an 11-0 lead over the first 5:16 before Jackie Saucedo hit a pair of free throws at 2:45 to get Sully on the board. Saucedo supplied all six points for the Lady Lobos in the first quarter as Sully went to the second trailing 17-6.

After HSU started the quarter with layup, the Lady Lobos went on a 7-0 run to trim the deficit to six at 4:50. All seven came from Chandre Nunez as she made a pair of two-point baskets and shot 3-of-4 from the free throw line during the run.

The Cowgirls got their lead back up to nine, but Maria Maldonado and Chandre finished the first half with a layup and a jumper to trail 28-23 at the break.

HSU started the second half with a triple but saw Kaylee Martinez and Chandre answer back with a layup and a jumper to cut it to four at the 8:35 mark. Martinez later closed it to four again after shooting a pair of free throws at 7:25 to trail 33-29.

The Cowgirls took control of the third quarter from there with a 21-4 run to enter the final quarter up 54-33.

Maldonado started the fourth with a triple at 9:41 to narrow the gap to 17.

An 11-4 HSU run put the Cowgirls ahead 65-40, their largest lead of the game, with 6:30 remaining.

Sully fought hard as they were able to get back to within 17 after finishing an 11-3 run with 3:15 left. Chandre added seven more to her night's total during the run.

Nunez found herself just two points away from reaching the 1,000-point mark in her collegiate career as she came down with a rebound with 1:15 left. Maldonado dribbled across half court and found her teammate wide open up top. Nunez wasted no time shooting as she watched the three-pointer fall to give her points 1,000 and 1,001 in her career as the clock struck 1:06.

The Lady Lobos would ultimately fall 76-56 to HSU on a night both teammates and fans could still rejoice in watching their lone senior reach a milestone in her collegiate career.

Nunez finished with seven rebounds, four assists, and four steals to go with her tied game-high 22 points.

Maldonado ended her night with 15 points, six rebounds, and three assists.

Saucedo was also in double digits with 10 points, five rebounds, and three steals.

Sully falls to 6-17 on the season and 4-10 in conference play. The Cowgirls improve to 18-5 and 12-2.

The Lady Lobos continue their season at the Gallego Center this Thursday with a 5:30 p.m. tip against visiting Concordia.
