ABILENE, Texas - Five Lobos finished with double-digit scoring efforts Tuesday to help Sul Ross pick up a 69-59 road win over McMurry for their first win of the season.
Keona Loftis finished with a team-high 17 points with five rebounds and six assists.
Alexis Carmosino had a monster night in the paint with a game-high 19 rebounds and 12 points.
Vania Hampton also registered a double-double with 14 points, 15 boards and added three steals.
The Lobos found themselves down 5-1 early before a 7-0 run gave them just their second lead of the game.
Teresa Quintana converted back-to-back buckets to tie the game and Loftis finished with a bucket and successful free throw for an 8-5 lead with 5:43 left in the first.
After a McMurry layup stopped that run, Sully embarked on another 7-0 run over the next 2:55 for a 15-7 lead with 2:37 before the second quarter.
The War Hawks accounted for the final four points of the first but trailed 15-11 heading to the second.
The Lobos came out strong and started the second with a 14-4 run over a 4:43 span. Carmosino started with a layup to open the quarter and later sink a triple after a
Kaylee Martinez layup to lead 22-13. The final seven of the streak came on three straight layups with one from Hampton and back-to-back from
Cassie Hogan. Hogan was fouled on the second one and made the free throw for a 29-15 lead.
McMurry was able to respond over the second half of the quarter with a 15-2 run for a slim 31-30 Sully lead heading to the break.
The War Hawks took the lead back at 8:11 on a jumper and wouldn't relinquish it until a Loftis layup at 6:56 made it 37-36. That was the start of a 12-1 run to put the Lobos back up eight with 3:22 left in the third.
After a McMurry triple, a Quintana jumper and Hampton layup started a 5-0 run that was finished by a Loftis free throw for a 50-40 lead heading to the fourth.
The War Hawks opened the final quarter with a jumper but saw their deficit balloon to 18 after a 10-0 Sully run. Hampton started with back-to-back layups before Quintana and Loftis followed suit with a layup each. Loftis was fouled on hers and hit the resulting free throw. Hampton later hit a free throw for a 60-42 score with 7:13 left.
McMurry was able to narrow the gap with an 11-4 answer over the next 4:41 to trail 64-53.
The Lobos were able to up their lead back to 14 down the stretch before eventually getting their first win of the season with a 69-59 final.
Hogan was also in double digits with 11 points and three steals.
Quintana finished with 10 to go with three assists and two steals.
Sully moves to 1-3 on the season. The War Hawks sit at 0-1.
The Lobos remain in Abilene to take on Hardin-Simmons at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday from Mabee Complex.
