Licon becomes #3 all-time scorer in 88-63 win over Howard Payne #SRSU | #ASChoops | #d3hoops

BROWNWOOD, Texas - Tristen Licon took another step toward Lobo greatness as he moved to #3 on the Sul Ross all-time scoring list with a 25-point performance in an 88-63 win over Howard Payne.

The El Paso native passed Brandon Harvey (1319) and currently sits at #3 with 1338 career points. He now looks up to former teammate Caleb Thomasson (1436) for #2 all-time.

HPU got on the board first with a jumper but quickly saw that change on a 7-0 answer from the Lobos. Licon started the run with a three-pointer and a layup before Logan Dixon's layup at 15:19 for a 7-2 lead.

After a Yellow Jackets jumper, Sully proceeded to go on an 8-0 run for a 15-4 lead at 14:08. Deveraux Minix first connected from beyond-the-arc before Licon converted back-to-back layups.

HPU cut it to 17-9, but Omar Boone responded with five of his own on a triple and layup for a 22-9 lead with 11:35 before the break.

The Yellow Jackets slimmed their deficit to seven on a small 6-0 run, but Carson Perkins put a stop to that with a triple at 9:56 for a 25-15 lead.

The Lobos upped their lead to 31-19 at 6:42 before HPU cut it to six on a 6-0 run just 2:10 later.

Sully didn't let that margin last long, finishing the first half on a 14-4 run. Licon added another six during the streak. Jake Lopez and Dixon each added four for a 45-29 lead at the break.

The Yellow Jackets were quick to respond in the second half with a 7-0 run over the first 1:41 to cut it to 45-36.

Caelyb Kerley ended that with a three-pointer for the start of a 9-0 run with Licon hitting back-to-back triples for a 54-36 lead with 16:16 left.

Both sides went back and forth over the next 3:12 before Kerley and Boone combined for a 7-0 run. Kerley started with a dunk and later hit a triple. Boone then finished the run with a layup for a 68-45 advantage at 10:50.

The closest HPU came again was 68-48 at the 8:42 mark as the Lobos outscored the Jackets 20-15 the rest of the way in the 88-63 win.

Licon's 25 came on 10-13 shooting and 3-3 from beyond the arc.

Boone finished with 14 points. Kerley was also in double digits with 10 on 4-6 shooting.

The Lobos move to 3-3 on the year and 1-0 in the ASC. HPU falls to 0-5 and 0-1.

Sully has finished play for 2020 and will be off until they travel to Jackson, MS to take on Belhaven on January 7.
