ALPINE- Women's basketball ended a five-game losing streak Saturday with a 60-55 win over University of the Ozarks at the Gallego Center.
Sully trailed 5-0 early before
Jocelyne Roque put the first four on the board for the Lady Lobos with a free throw and later a jumper.
The Eagles went on to take a 12-5 lead before
Kaylee Martinez hit back-to-back jumpers to cut it to three with 3:26 left in the first quarter.
Martinez hit the following bucket for Sully their next time down the floor when was fouled on the make and hit her free throw to trail 14-12.
Chandre Nunez tied the game 14-14 on a jumper after a Martinez offensive rebound at 1:31.
Ozarks hit a late three to take a 17-14 lead to the second quarter.
The Eagles started the second with back-to-back triples to lead 23-14.
Jackie Saucedo answered with a three-pointer, but Ozarks came right back with another three to lead again by nine.
The Lady Lobos responded with a 6-0 run with Martinez scoring the last five to trim the Eagle lead to 26-23 at 5:50.
After an Ozarks jumper, Sully took their first lead of the game on another 6-0 run. Roque started with two free throws before
Maria Maldonado sank a jumper. Martinez finished the run when she put back up an offensive rebound for a 29-28 lead with 2:22 left in the first half.
The Eagles would take the lead back, but Roque and Maldonado finished the half on back-to-back jumpers for a 33-31 lead heading to intermission.
Sul Ross started the second half hot with an 8-0 run to take a 10-point lead. Nunez scored the final six of the run on two free throws and back-to-back jumpers for a 43-31 lead 6:42.
The Lady Lobos held at least a six-point lead the rest of the third before Maldonado sank two late free throws for a 47-39 lead heading to the fourth.
Ozarks started the final quarter with a triple to quickly trim Sully's lead to four.
Addison Jenkins responded two possessions later with a fast break layup on an assist by Martinez to lead 49-42 with 8:57 left.
The Lady Lobos had an answer offensively every time the Eagles looked to make a run and never allowed the lead to get closer than four in the 60-55 win.
Martinez finished with game-highs of 18 points and twelve rebounds. Seven of her boards were offensive. She was also 8-of-8 from the free throw line.
Maldonado added 15 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and three blocks.
Nunez and Roque both finished with 10 points and six rebounds.
Sully improves to 5-13 on the season and 3-6 in ASC play. Ozarks drops to 5-13 and 0-9.
The Lady Lobos' next game comes Saturday, February 1 against Howard Payne at the Gallego Center.
