ABILENE- The Lady Lobos and War Hawks played a close game throughout, but it was McMurry that edged Sully in an 87-82 final Saturday in Abilene.
The War Hawks started the game on a 7-2 run before the Lady Lobos answered with a 6-0 run for their first lead of the game.
Kaylee Martinez,
Chandre Nunez, and
Jocelyne Roque converted layups on their next three trips down the floor for an 8-7 advantage with 5:17 left in the first.
The game would see five one-point lead changes over the next 2:31 before
Kaylee Martinez tied things 13-13 on a free throw and
Teresa Quintana added a three-point play on a jumper. She was fouled on the make and made her free throw for a 16-13 lead at 1:50.
McMurry finished the quarter on a 10-2 run for a 23-18 lead heading to the second.
Sully started the second quarter with the first four points on a
Maria Maldonado free throw and
Jackie Saucedo's three-point play on a layup and free throw after the shooting foul.
The War Hawks extended their lead on a 17-6 run to lead 40-28 with 3:11 left in the half.
The Lobos ended the half on a 10-2 run. Quintana started the run on a jumper before a Nunez triple and Maldonado jumper. After a McMurry layup, Roque converted a jumper and Quintana added the last point of the half on a free throw for a 42-38 score at the break.
The War Hawks started the third on a 10-2 run for a 12-point lead at the 6:18 mark.
Sully cut the deficit to seven on four different occasions and trailed 61-54 heading to the fourth.
McMurry opened the fourth on a 7-0 run to lead 64-54 with 9:21 left.
The Lady Lobos answered with a 7-0 run to bring it back to a six-point game.
Chandre Nunez finished the run with back-to-back jumpers for a 67-61 game at the 6:00 mark.
The closest Sully cut the deficit the remainder of the way was four points with a second left in the 87-82 loss.
Maldonado finished with a team-high 26 points on 8-13 shooting and 9-12 from the free throw line.
Nunez totaled 17, seven rebounds, four assists, and three steals.
Quintana added 15, four rebounds, and three assists.
The Lady Lobos move to 4-10 and 2-3 in the ASC. The War Hawks improve to 9-4 and 2-3.
Sully is back on the road next week with a conference clash against LeTourneau on Thursday in Longview.
