Women's basketball opens conference play with loss to Howard Payne #SRSU | #BrandEm | #ASChoops

BROWNWOOD- Women's basketball started American Southwest Conference play Saturday with an 82-52 loss to Howard Payne in Brownwood.

Sully's first lead came with 7:51 left in the first quarter off a Jessica Magallanes layup to go ahead 4-3.

The largest Lady Lobo lead of the first came after Kayley Diaz converted a fastbreak layup at 3:12 for a 9-6 advantage.

The Lady Jackets finished the quarter with a small 6-2 run for a 12-11 lead going to the second quarter.

HPU started the quarter with a three to take a 15-11 lead. Sully immediately responded with a 7-0 run to flip the script. Maria Maldonado started the run with a three-pointer. Chandre Nunez then retook the lead with a layup before Kaylee Martinez finished the run with two free throws for an 18-15 lead at the 8:12 mark.

The Lady Jackets tied the game on two occasions and eventually took a 21-20 lead at 5:48. HPU then went on a 12-4 run for a 32-25 lead at the break.

The Lady Jackets opened up the second half with a 12-0 run to take a 44-25 lead at 7:04.

Martinez cut the deficit to 17 with a layup at 6:23, but HPU answered with a 9-0 run. Both sides traded baskets over the final 2:44 of the third for a 60-34 score heading to the fourth.

The Lady Lobos cut the deficit to 21 three times in the fourth, but HPU's offense stayed hot throughout for an 82-52 win over Sully.

Ashley Nunez led all Lady Lobos with 11 points and four steals.

Chandre Nunez was also in double-digits with 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Sully falls to 2-8 on the season and 0-1 in ASC play. Howard Payne stands at 5-5 and 1-0.

The Lady Lobos are off for the holiday season and will resume conference play Thursday, January 2 against Louisiana College at the Gallego Center.
