Women's basketball falls 83-80 in hard-fought battle with Texas Lutheran #SRSU | #BrandEm | #ASChoops

SEGUIN- Five Lady Lobos scored in double-digits, but Texas Lutheran came away with an 83-80 non-conference win Saturday in Seguin.

TLU started the game with a 5-0 run for the early lead.

Sully responded with a 6-0 run. Maria Maldonado accounted for the first four points with a free throw and a three-pointer. Chandre Nunez finished the run with a jumper for a 6-5 lead with 4:38 left in the first quarter.

The Lady Bulldogs used another 5-0 run to retake the lead 10-6.

The Lady Lobos answered with a quick three points off a Kaylee Martinez free throw and Chandre jumper to trail by one with 3:10 left in the first.

TLU would go on to lead by four another three times in the quarter, but Sully was able to go to the second quarter down just 18-16.

The Lady Bulldogs opened the second on a small 5-2 run to take a 23-18 lead.

Chandre then drained a triple and next time down the floor Jessica Magallanes tied the game 23-23 on a layup with 7:49 left in the second.

TLU then went on the offensive with an 11-2 run for a 34-25 lead at the 5:15 mark.

The Lady Lobos brought it to within six twice in the quarter but went to the break trailing 42-32.

Kayley Diaz and Chandre started second half scoring with back-to-back buckets to cut the deficit to six.

After two Texas Lutheran free throws, Maldonado's triple at 7:28 made it 44-39.

The closest Sul Ross got in the quarter was four and came it twice. Diaz hit a pair of free throws at 5:08 to bring it to 47-43. Martinez later converted both her free throws at 3:41 for a 49-45 game.

The Lady Bulldogs extended their lead back to 56-47 with 1:09 left in the third, but Sully finished the quarter on a 7-3 run. Diaz hit a triple from beyond the arc, Magallanes added a layup, and Peyton Anastas finished with the final bucket of the quarter on a jumper for a 59-54 TLU lead heading to the fourth.

The Lady Bulldogs started the fourth with a triple to go back up eight.

Maldonado and Diaz responded with back-to-back jumpers to cut the deficit in half.

After two TLU free throws, another three from Diaz resulted in a 64-61 game with 8:41 remaining. 

The Lady Bulldogs used an extended 13-6 run to lead 77-67 with 5:07 left.

Maldonado and Chandre combined for a 6-1 run to cut the double-digit deficit in half. Maldonado started with a three and Nunez finished with a layup and free throw after the shot for a 78-73 game at the 3:54 mark.

Magallanes was able to make it a one possession game, 81-78, on a layup with 48 seconds left.

After TLU made the first of two free throw attempts for a four-point lead, Chandre hit both of hers from the charity stripe to trail 82-80 with 30 seconds left.

The Lady Bulldogs made the first of two free throws with 29 seconds left to extend their lead back to three.

The Lady Lobos were unable to connect on their final three shots as TLU came away with the 83-80 win.

Chandre Nunez scored a game-high 24 points. She added eight rebounds, four assists, and two steals

Maldonado had a team-high eight assists to go with 12 points and five rebounds..

Martinez led the team in rebounding with nine and added 11 points.

Both Magallanes and Diaz scored in double-digits with 13 and 12 respectively.

Sully falls to 2-6 on the year. The Lady Bulldogs improve to 2-5.

The Lady Lobos next travel to Kerrville for a 7:00 p.m. Tuesday tip against Schreiner.
