ALPINE- A double-double from
Chandre Nunez that included a team-high 17 points and 10 rebounds was not enough Saturday as University of the Southwest walked away with a 66-62 win over the Lady Lobos at the Gallego Center.
Sully's offense started the game on a 6-0 run.
Kaylee Martinez started the run with two free throws and finished with a layup after an offensive rebound.
Nunez gave the Lady Lobos their largest first period lead of five on a three-pointer to go up 11-6 lead with 4:50 remaining.
The Lady Mustangs responded with a 6-0 run to tie things and take their first lead of the game at 12-11.
Sully used a quick 4-0 run with back-to-back buckets from
Peyton Anastas for a 15-12 lead with 58 seconds left in the first.
Jessica Magallanes' layup with 10 seconds left gave the Lady Lobos a 17-14 lead entering the second.
Nunez opened the second period with a three to go back up four.
Southwest responded with a three by Shanyce Cabrales to cut the deficit to 20-19.
Sully's offense responded again with an 8-0 run. Nunez started the run with a jumper and Martinez added two more free throws. After a media timeout, Magallanes and Nunez hit back-to-back jumpers for a 28-19 lead with 3:19 left in the first half.
The Lady Mustangs ended the half on a quick 7-2 run and trailed Sul Ross 30-26 heading to the third period.
Southwest started the third on a 8-3 run to take just their second lead of the game at the 7:53 mark.
Martinez responded 19 seconds later as her jumper put the Lady Lobos back up 35-34. Nunez added a layup to put Sully back up three.
The Lady Mustangs quickly retook the lead on a 7-0 run for a 41-37 lead with 4:44 left in the third.
The Lady Lobos trimmed the deficit to one on two occasions but trailed for the remainder of the third and went to the fourth down 49-45.
Nunez started the fourth with a pair of free throws to cut it to 49-47.
Southwest would hold four to eight point leads until Martinez's layup brought it to within two. On the next position she converted one of two free throws for a 63-62 Lady Mustangs' lead with just 1:32 left.
Southwest added to their slim lead on a layup with 16 seconds left to go up 65-62. Nunez then drew a foul in the act of shooting a three and nearly tied the game as the ball rimmed out. She had a chance at the line with three free throws but was unable to convert on all three. The Lady Mustangs added a free throw for a four point lead and eventual 66-62 victory.
Nunez shot 7-14 from the field and 1-1 from beyond the arc in her 17 point, 10 rebound double-double performance.
Martinez shot 4-8, adding 13 points to go with five rebounds, four offensive, and three assists.
Sully starts the year at 0-1. Southwest picks up their first win and sits at 1-4.
The Lady Lobos are back at it Friday, November 15 in when they take on East Texas Baptist at 7:00 p.m. in Marshall.
