Tied at half, Lobos fall 31-20 to Howard Payne #SRSU | #BrandEm | #ASCfb

BROWNWOOD- 21 unanswered points by the Yellow Jackets in the second half spelled doom for the Lobos in their 31-20 loss to Howard Payne Saturday in Brownwood.

Sully got scoring started early in the first quarter on a seven-play, 65-yard drive that was capped off by a Williton Grear three-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 lead.

The Yellow Jackets went on to score 10 unanswered with a 26-yard field goal and a 46-yard touchdown pass from McGwire Martin to Thomas Williams for a 10-7 lead with 5:49 left in the first quarter.

The Lobos responded with a 14-play, 59-yard drive over the next 5:24 that ended with a Jaden Brown 28-yard field goal for a 10-10 tie that went to the half.

HPU used their first three possessions of the third quarter to tack on 21 unanswered for a 31-10 lead with 4:55 left in the third.

Sully got on the board for the first time in the second half on a 35-yard field goal from Brown to the cut the deficit to 31-13 with 3:45 left in the third. The drive lasted 1:02 on five plays and 59 yards. The first play of the drive was a 55-yard pass from Trey Johns to Logan Schnautz to help put the Lobos in field goal range.

Fabian Baeza replaced Johns for the final drive of the fourth quarter and led the team on a five-play, 27-yard drive that resulted in a 14-yard pass to Dre'Chon Moody to make it 31-20 Yellow Jackets with 4:35 remaining.

HPU was able to run out the clock on their next possession and defeated the Lobos 31-20.

Johns finished 10 for 27 passing with 145 yards and an interception.

Grear rushed for a team-high 63 yards on 11 attempts and a touchdown.

Schnautz caught three passes for 72 yards and a game-high 55-yard reception.

Sully falls to 3-5 on the year and 3-4 in ASC play. HPU improves to 3-5 and 2-5.

The Lobos continue their season on the road Saturday, November 9 in Jackson, Mississippi against Belhaven with a 12:00 p.m. kickoff.
