GEORGETOWN- A stifling defense and two big yardage plays played part in the Lobos 21-9 win Saturday over the Southwestern Pirates in Georgetown.
Off an interception, Southwestern started their second drive on the Lobos 41-yard line. Sully was able to keep them out of the end zone and force Will Herbst to convert a 24-yard field goal for a 3-0 Pirates lead.
Southwestern's next drive started on the Sul Ross 34-yard line. The Lobos were again able to contain the Pirates and Herbst kicked a 33-yard field goal for a 6-0 lead.
The second quarter saw both teams trade punts as the score remained 6-0 Pirates at halftime.
The Lobos needed just one play on their third drive of the second half to get on the board.
Trey Johns connected with
Dre'Chon Moody for a 44-yard touchdown.
Jaden Brown converted the extra point for a 7-6 lead.
Sully's special teams stepped up on Southwestern's next possession.
Cory McMahan blocked Phillip Key's punt and it was taken back 12 yards by
Micah Garcia for a touchdown and a 14-6 lead with 2:20 left in the third quarter.
McMahan then intercepted David Brandenbu on the next Pirates play to set up the Lobos with great field position at the Southwestern 40-yard line.
The Lobos came up empty-handed as Brown missed a 38-yard field goal.
Now in the fourth quarter,
Williton Grear broke a 56-yard run to the end zone for a 21-6 lead. The drive lasted two plays and 45 seconds with Grear rushing both times for 58 yards.
Sully's two offensive scoring drives totaled three plays, 102 yards in 54 seconds.
Southwestern answered back with a nine play, 38-yard drive in 4:13, but the defense held them to a Herbst 39-yard field goal. Pirates trailed 21-9 with 9:50 remaining.
The Pirates quickly got the ball back on an interception and started a drive at the 50-yard line.
The Lobos defense soon faced 1st and 10 at the 15-yard line with Southwestern looking to make it a one score game.
Sully allowed only five yards on the next three plays and forced a fourth down.
Javeon Moses picked off Hank Moore at the goal line and returned it 18 yards with 5:09 remaining.
J Contreras contributed the third pick of the day as he intercepted Moore with under a minute to go to help seal the deal in the 21-9 victory.
Johns completed 11 of 19 through the air for 95 yards and a touchdown.
Grear rushed 21 times for 173 yards and a score. His average rush was 8.2 yards per carry.
Moody finished the day with 71 yards on four receptions and a score.
The Lobos defense held the Pirates to just 31 yards through the air with three interceptions and two sacks.
Levah Tarry totaled a team-high 10 tackles. As a team, the Lobos totaled 12.5 tackles for loss and 32 yards.
Sully improves to 2-3 on the season and evens their ASC mark at 2-2. The Pirates fall to 2-2 and 1-2.
The Lobos now enjoy their bye week and will be off until they clash with Louisiana College on October 19 in Pineville, LA.
