PINEVILLE, Louisiana- 445 yards of offense and a career-high 252 rushing yards from
Williton Grear helped propel the Lobos to a 34-13 win Saturday against Louisiana College.
Jaden Brown provided the first six Lobos points with a 40-yard field goal in the first quarter and a 28-yarder in the second.
Sully's air attack, led by
Trey Johns, had its best showing of the season Saturday. Johns connected with
Dre'Chon Moody on a 22-yard pass for a 13-0 lead after a Brown extra point. Sully's previous win over Southwestern saw two scoring drives that took only three plays in 54 seconds. This drive lasted 5:35 on 11 plays and 80 yards.
The Wildcats marched down the field on their next drive but were stopped on the doorstep. With the ball on the four yard line, quarterback Sal Palermo was intercepted by
Isaiah Jacobs and the lead remained 13-0 Lobos going to the half.
Sully's quick scoring prowess we saw against the Pirates returned against LC.
Williton Grear broke an 82-yard touchdown run on the second play of the third quarter to increase the lead to 20-0. It was the longest rush in Grear's career and his third score in as many games.
The Wildcats answered back with a 25-yard touchdown pass from Palermo to Micah Dunn late in the third to put LC on the board but still trailing 20-7.
The Wildcats forced punts on the next two Lobo possessions and eventually scored on a 6-yard rushing touchdown by Aaron Woods. The extra point was blocked to keep it a seven point game at 20-13.
A quick three-play, 62-yard drive over the next 2:12 was capped by a 49-yard strike from Johns to
Elijah Stewart to put Sully ahead 27-13 with 2:46 remaining.
Carter Bates nabbed the second interception for the defense on the ensuing LC drive. He picked off Palermo at the Wildcat 40 and returned it 25 yards to the 15 yard line.
After three rushes from
Kadarius Page for six yards, they rolled the dice on 4th and four and Gear rewarded them with a nine-yard touchdown run for a 34-13 lead and eventual win.
Grear rushed for a career-high 252 yards and two scores.
Johns completed nine of 17 passing for 150 yards and two touchdowns through the air.
The defense sacked Palermo three times.
Lorenzo Fowler led with 1.5,
Marcus Luna had one and
Jalen Howard had a half sack.
The Lobos are now winners of their last two games and have outscored opponents 55-22.
Sully evens their record to 3-3 on the season and 3-2 in conference play. Louisiana College drops to 2-5 and 2-4.
Sul Ross next hosts Texas Lutheran Saturday, October 26 with a 6:00 p.m. kickoff for homecoming.
