ABILENE- McMurry University held off a 10-point Lobo rally in the third quarter and registered a 35-24 ASC victory over visiting Sul Ross Saturday night in Abilene.
 
The War Hawks' win over the Lobos snaps a three-game losing streak in the all-time series between the two teams which dates back to 1923.
 
In Saturday night's contest, McMurry lit the board first on a 73-yard scoring missile from Kurt Hurley to Eriel Dorsey. Tanner Wright's extra point kick cleared the uprights for a 7-0 War Hawk lead with 12:54 left in the first quarter.
 
The Lobos tied the game at 9:12 as Ozias Wright's nine-yard run capped a seven-play, 47-yard drive. Julio Azua added the point-after kick.
 
McMurry broke the knot at the 5:12 mark second quarter as Hurley connected to Trevion Harris for a three-yard touchdown toss. The extra point kick by Wright gave the War Hawks a 14-7 lead.
 
The home team then broke ahead by 14 as Hurley found Doyle Hughes on a 41-yard strike. The point-after attempt by Wright put McMurry on top, 21-7 with 1:59 left before the break.
 
Sul Ross scored in the final 41 seconds of the half as Fabian Baeza found Keondre Strong from 26 yards. Azua converted the extra point as Sully trailed 21-14 heading to intermission.
 
Azua then nailed a 32-yard field goal to pull the Lobos to within four with 8:08 remaining in the third quarter.
 
Jeremy Schilhab then scampered three yards into the McMurry end zone before Azua's kick put Sul Ross ahead for the first time of the outing with 43 seconds left in the third period.
 
The War Hawks took the go ahead as Hurely hit Spencer Knox on a four-yard touchdown pass. Wright converted the extra point as McMurry sported a 28-24 lead with 8:04 left in the fourth quarter.
 
Following a Sul Ross turnover, McMurry would put the Lobos away as Hughes hauled in a 47-yard touchdown run with 6:11 remaining in the game. Wright's kick was good as McMurry would go on to secure the 35-24 victory.
 
Sul Ross outpaced the War Hawks in total offense by a 523-498 margin.
 
The Lobos also held the edge in first down totals by a 26-20 margin. McMurry stacked up 452 yards of passing offense while limiting Sul Ross to 247.  Sully took to the ground 45 times for 276 yards while the War Hawks mustered 16 carries for just 46 yards. The Lobo passing game completed 25 of 46 passes and two interceptions. McMurry finished completing 28 of 41 passes.

Williton Grear posted 22 carries and netted 173 yards. Fabian Baeza completed 25 of 43 passes for 247 yards and one touchdown. He surrendered two interceptions and was sacked once.
 
Manuel Retana posted his third straight game with a punting average of over 35 yards and sported a long of 46 yards.
 
Levah Tarry and Isaiah Jacobs finished with team highs of seven tackles each. Tarry notched a forced fumble while Jacobs had a breakup. Tarry and Ronin Williams both posted a sack each with a combined loss of 20 yards.
 
Sul Ross falls to 0-3 on the season and 0-2 in ASC competition while McMurry improves to 1-3 and 1-2.
 
The Lobos will host Louisiana College next Saturday.
 
Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and will be streamed on the Sul Ross Sports Network.
