2017 Men's ASC Championship recap
Following his record-breaking leap in the long jump,
Jermaine Stevens, Jr. helped pace the 4X100 relay to its second consecutive ASC title in the finals round of last year's ASC Track and Field Championships.
Stevens, 2017's ASC Outstanding Male Track and Field Athlete, broke the conference meet record in the long jump in 2017 with a leap of 7.64 meters. Stevens performance surpassed McMurry's Gavan Bass who posted a leap of 7.51 meters in 2012.
In the finals of the 100 meter dash at last season's conference meet, Stevens captured the gold with a sprint of 10.86 which tied former teammate Hassan Lipscomb's first place time in 2016.
Richard Snyder and
Byron Jones finished second and third in the 200 meter sprint in times of 21.56 and 21.60.
In the long haul,
Joseph Parker placed second and third in times of 4:15.85 and 16:41.36 in the 1500 and 5000 meter runs.
The Sul Ross 4X100 team repeated as ASC champions last year clocking in at 41.68 which was 0.53 hundredths of a second better than their first place time in 2016. Jones replaced Lipscomb on 2017's 4X100 team and joined Snyder, Davis and Stevens for their second straight ASC title.
Dimitri Thornton teamed up with Davis, Snyder and Jones to claim the silver in the 4X400 in a time of 3:17.65.
In field events,
Sergio Solis and
Mando Ruvio captured gold and bronze in the discus with throws of 33.96 and 30.86 meters.
2017 Women's ASC Championship Recap
Competing in her final ASC Meet last season,
Karley Harris defended her conference crown in the 400 meter dash in the finals round.
Harris timed in at 59.27 to win her second consecutive ASC 400 meter run. She came in fifth in the 200 meter with a time of 26.45 in last year's conference finals.
In long distance,
Rachel Hamilton captured the silver in the 800 meter run in 2:34.29.
Hamilton then joined teammates Maria Alatore, Karina Ramriez and anchor runner Harris to claim a second place finish in the women's 4X400 relay clocking in at 4:18.31.
Turning to field events,
Audrey Lozano and
La Nasia Reed took the top two spots respectively in the shot put with throws of 12.66 and 12.21.
