ALPINE, Texas- The Sul Ross State University Lobos (21-6) are one victory away from claiming their first American Southwest Conference Championship since 2003-04 as the Pack topped U.T. Dallas (19-8) in a 62-54 decision in Friday's semifinal of the ASC Men's Basketball Championship Tournament.
Sully will face East Texas Baptist University for the ASC title at 6:00 p.m. Saturday night at the Pete P. Gallego Center.
The Tigers defeated LeTourneau University in a 108-101 score fest earlier to advance to Saturday's conference championship game.
Against the Comets,
Conner Dawson and
Tristen Licon paced the offense with 16 points each.
A three-pointer by Licon put Sul Ross ahead, 8-4 with 14:55 left in a low-scoring first half.
Licon popped the net again from long range at the 10:56 mark for an 11-4 Lobo lead.
The Lobos would hold the advantage until the 3:46 mark as UTD's Jon Hatcher connected on a three-point bucket giving the visitors a 17-16 lead.
Broderick Johnson followed up with two free throws to extend the Comets' lead to three at 3:32.
Sully's
Caleb Thomasson then banked on a short range jumper to pull the home squad to within one at 3:05.
Dawson's floater at 2:39 gave Sul Ross a brief 20-19 lead before the Comets' Dimitrius Underwood scored from the elbow returning the favor back to U.T. Dallas on the ensuing possession.
Gary Ringo, JR then fired off a three-point basket with 11 seconds remaining giving Sul Ross a 23-21 lead heading to intermission.
Stephen Walker spread the Lobo lead to four with a layup nearly a minute into the second half.
U.T. Dallas then jumped on a 4-0 run to tie the game at 25 with just under 18 minutes remaining.
Thomasson then capped a 5-0 run with a scoop shot at 16:11 giving the Pack a 32-25 lead.
The Comets battled their way down to a pair of one-point deficits and tied the game at 47 with 5:15 left in the game.
The visitors would then hold a slim lead before two free throws by
C.J. Ross at 4:24 tied the game at 51.
UTD was not able to recover from a pair of seven-point deficits and finally gave way as
B.J. Hollis scored the final point of the outing with a free throw at :19 seconds giving Sully the 62-54 victory.
Hollis nailed down 11 points in Friday's win while Thomasson collected a team-high eight rebounds and five assists.
