ABILENE- A 34-point surge in the second half propelled No. 11 Hardin-Simmons University to a 48-27 homecoming victory over visiting Sul Ross at Shelton Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The Lobos had the Cowboys on the ropes in the first half and held the lead three times before a Hardin-Simmons rally gave the home team a slim 14-13 lead heading to intermission.
Sul Ross took the initiative in the first quarter off a 22-yard field goal by
Julio Azua at the 9:09 mark.
The Cowboys answered with an 18-yard touchdown pass from Ty Hooper to Kevi Evans. Jamie Pogue added the extra point kick giving the Cowboys a 7-3 lead with 4:18 left in the opening period.
The Lobos struck back early in the second quarter as
Fabian Baeza connected with
Jordan Lewandowski for an 11-yard scoring toss. Azua's point-after attempt was good as Sully grabbed a 13-7 lead at the 13:57 mark.
Azua added another field goal, this time from 20 yards out extending the visitors lead, 13-7.
Hooper then fired off a 19-yard strike to Bryson Hammonds at 4:35. Pogue added the extra point kick for a 14-13 Hardin-Simmons lead heading to the half.
The Cowboys spread the gap early in the third quarter as Hooper found Reese Childress on a 43-yard scoring pass. Pogue added the point-after kick for a 21-13 Hardin-Simmons lead with 13:07 remaining in the third quarter.
Sully's
Williton Grear then hauled in a 66-yard touchdown run capping a brief three-play, 75-yard march. A two-point conversion rush fell short with the Lobos trailing by two, 21-19 at the 11:45 mark.
Hardin-Simmons reeled off 21 unanswered points to take a commanding 42-19 lead extending into the final two minutes of the contest.
With six seconds left in the fourth quarter, Baeza connected with
James Parker for a five-yard toss. Sully converted a two-point pass and trailed 42-27.
The Cowboys responded on the ensuing kickoff as Rae Millsap scored on an 89-yard return and sealed the 48-27 Hardin-Simmons victory.
For the game, Hardin-Simmons outpaced Sul Ross in total offensive yards by a 432-422 margin. The Lobos won the ground battle netting 205 yards compared to the Cowboys' 175 yards.
Sully also won the first down battle with 23 while the Cowboys totaled 20.
Individually, Grear netted 154 yards off of 21 carries and posted a touchdown. Baeza completed 27 of 47 passes for 205 yards and two touchdowns.
Parker led the defense with eight tackles including a sack.
Fentrese Milligan recorded seven stops with a sack, a forced fumble and a breakup.
Sul Ross drops to 0-6 on the season and 0-5 in ASC play while the Cowboys improve to 5-1 and 4-1.
The Lobos will host Howard Payne in a 6:00 p.m. Homecoming contest next Saturday night.
