AUSTIN- In their first road trip of 2018, the Sul Ross men's basketball team fell in a 95-94 ASC decision to Concordia University Thursday night.
Despite the loss, Sul Ross holds a two-game lead over the Tornados for the top spot in the ASC West Division.
Thursday's setback drops the Lobos to 14-5 on the season and 9-2 in conference competition. Concordia breaks a two-game skid and improves to 13-6 and 7-4.
Sully and Concordia swapped leads over the first five minutes of the contest.
Two free throws by
Stephen Walker put the Lobos ahead by a point with 11:25 left in the first half.
Sul Ross then mounted an 11-0 run capped by a three-point bucket by
Tristen Licon at the 5:13 mark for a 43-31 lead.
The Tornados cut their deficit down to two at 1:02 before
C.J. Ross banked on two foul shots at 15 seconds to put Sully up, 54-50 heading to the half.
Sully held a pair of seven-point leads over the first four minutes of the second half..
A layup by Concordia's Ronnie Hamilton tied the game at 80 with 8:39 left in the contest.
A pair of lead exchanges would follow before a foul shot by Ross at 5:49 knotted the game up at 86.
Two more ties would follow over the next four and a half minutes before the Tornados' Ben Page drained two free throws with seven seconds remaining.
Sully fired off a desperation toss that fell short as Concordia survived for the 95-94 victory.
Caleb Thomasson led Lobo scorers with 23 points while Walker added 18.
B.J. Hollis and Ross posted 16 points each while Licon picked up 14.
Sul Ross travels to Belton Saturday for a 4:00 p.m. contest at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
