Annie Lenoir scored a season-high 21 points and led the Sul Ross women's basketball team to a 62-57 ASC victory over visiting Hardin-Simmons Saturday.
With the victory, the Lady Lobos improve to 6-12 on the season and 4-6 in ASC play. The Cowgirls fall to 4-13 and 2-8.
The Cowgirls' Danie Mabry scored the first bucket for either team nearly a minute and a half into the contest before a transition jumper by
Taylor Gass pulled Sully to within one.
Hardin-Simmons extended its lead to four off a three-pointer by Taylor Seastrunk with 6:27 left in the first quarter.
Sul Ross fought its way down to a one-point deficit at as
Angalyn Latin scored on a layup at 4:29.
A jumper in the lane by
Jasmine Valdez, two possessions later, put the Lady Lobos on top, 11-10 with 3:33 remaining in the opening quarter.
Two free throws by
Erica Solomon- Powell extended Sully's lead to three at the 3:18 mark.
HSU's Jesyka Lee nailed down a short range jumper in the final seconds of the period with the Lady Lobos ahead, 13-12.
Both teams battled for the lead early in the second period.
A Lenoire three-pointer put Sul Ross ahead by a slim 19-17 margin at the 4:48 mark.
The Lady Lobos then fired off a quick 5-0 run ending with a layup by Lenoire at 3:24 for a 24-17 Sul Ross lead.
Hardin-Simmons cut its deficit down to two at 1:33 with a free throw by Seastrunk.
Karlea Ritchie then drained a midrange jump shot with less than 30 seconds to tie the game at 28 heading to the half.
Valdez scored the first bucket on a layup just five seconds into the third quarter to break the tie before Latin fired off a long range basket to extend the home team's lead to five.
The Cowgirls pulled to within four, three-point deficits over the next five minutes.
Lenoire banked again from long range to give the Lady Lobos their largest lead of eight with 2:52 remaining in the third.
Two free throws by HSU's Gabby Zullo at 35 seconds pulled Hardin-Simmons to within two, 45-43 heading to the final quarter.
Four lead exchanges would transpire in the fourth quarter before Powell knocked down a free throw at the 2:47 mark breaking a 54-54 tie.
One more tie would follow with a bucket by the Cowgirls' Gaffney for a 56-56 knotting at 45 seconds.
Sul Ross would end the game with a 6-1 run as
Lizette Heredia converted a free throw with 10 seconds remaining for the 62-57 win.
Latin posted a double double with 14 points and 12 rebounds and led the team in assists with three. Latin also finished with a block and a steal.
The Lady Lobos travel to Austin on Thursday for a 5:30 ASC tip against Concordia University.
