PINEVILLE, Louisiana- A 27-yard field goal by sophomore kicker
Eli Lopez (Austin/AHS) with one second left in regulation propelled Sul Ross State University (3-1, 2-1) to a 34-31 ASC victory over Louisiana College (1-3, 0-3) Saturday night in Pineville.
Lopez nailed a 34-yard field goal a split second after the Wildcats called a timeout. Louisiana College was then penalized with 12 men on the field which set up Lopez's 27-yard, game-winning boot.
After a dormant opening period, the Lobos tagged the initial points on the board as Lopez converted a 29-yard field goal with 13:09 left in the second quarter.
James Davis (Houston/South) then found
Jeremy Reed (Grandview, MO/GHS) on a five-yard toss finishing off a five-play, 46-yard drive. Lopez was perfect on the PAT with 10:08 left before intermission.
The Wildcats' Willie Davis picked off a Davis pass at midfield which set up a 50-yard scoring drive. D'Ondre Joseph connected with Shedrick Davis from five yards out before a failed extra point kick at 2:12.
Sul Ross would take their four-point lead to the break before
Steven Savedra (El Paso/Del Valle) scored at the 13:19, third quarter mark off a two-yard pass from Davis. Lopez's kick split the uprights for a 17-6 lead.
Louisiana College then used an 80-yard trek which ended on a one-yard trot by Joseph. The Wildcats the converted a two-point pass play to pull within three at 3:57.
The Wildcats would take the lead for the first time on their next offensive series as Joseph fired off another touchdown pass to Davis with 2:02 left in the third. The PAT kick was good giving the home team a 21-17 advantage.
The Lobos answered on the next drive as
Markese Martin (Nash/NHS) scored on a 62-yard run. Lopez tacked on the PAT at 35 seconds.
Louisiana College claimed the go ahead with 11:05 left in the closing quarter. Drake Bataglia hauled in a 62-yard pass from Joseph before the extra point kick.
Sul Ross then took nine plays and 67 yards as Davis hit
Jordan Batson (San Antonio/Wagner) on a six-yard strike. Lopez's kick was good with 8:11 left in the contest.
The Wildcats would knot the game at 31 as Chris Sebren booted a 29-yard field goal with just 29 seconds remaining.
Martin returned the ensuing kickoff 41 yards which set up a three-play, 23 yard drive ending with Lopez's time-expiring field goal.
Louisiana College won the battle in total offensive yardage by a 519-426 margin.
The Lobos were five of six in red zone conversions while the Wildcats scored all-three times inside the Sul Ross 20 yard line.
Both teams combined for 163 yards of penalties.
Individually, Davis completed 19 of 37 passes for 267 yards and three touchdowns. Martin led Lobo rushers netting 64 yards off of just two carries while Batson pulled down six catches for 87 yards and a score.
Defensively,
Mike Quinonez (El Paso/El Dorado) recorded a team-best 14 tackles.
Jacques Wisner (Dallas/Newman Smith) and
Jermaine Stevens, Jr. recorded a pair of break ups each.
Sul Ross will face Southwestern University in a 6:00 p.m. ASC contest next Saturday at Georgetown.
