GEORGETOWN- A 18-yard, time-expiring field goal by Southwestern's Luke Fierst lifted the Pirates (3-3, 3-2) to a 29-27 victory over visiting Sul Ross (3-2, 2-2) in an action packed ASC contest Saturday night.
Fierst's game-winning kick answered a 17-point second half attack by the Lobos as Sully came out of the half trailing by 12.
Fierst put the initial points on the board with a 36-yard field goal at the 7:43 mark, first quarter.
Frederick Hover then scored on a one-yard, quarterback scamper. Fierst made good on the PAT for a 10-0 lead at 5:46.
The Lobos turned to their defense as
Job Mason (Thorndale/THS) recovered a fumble and returned it 53 yards for the score.
Eli Lopez converted the extra point kick with 2:47 left in the opening period.
A bad snap on an attempted Lobo punt led to a Pirate safety nearly two minutes into the second quarter.
Hover then scored on another keeper from two yards out. Fierst nailed the extra point for a 19-7 lead for the home team with 8:48 left before intermission.
Hover struck again with 9:55 left in the third period on a seven-yard run before Fierst's extra point.
A 50-yard kick return by
Jermaine Stevens, Jr. (Houston/South) set up a 37-yard touchdown run by
Jordan Batson (San Antonio/Wagner) four plays and 45 yards later. Lopez was good on the PAT at 8:31.
Lopez then cleared the uprights on a 20-yard chip shot on Sully's next offensive series.
An interception by junior defensive back
Jakorey Richard (Beaumont/Ozen) set Sul Ross up at the Pirate 10-yard line.
James Davis (Houston/South) then connected with
Josh Lopez (Hereford/HHS) on the next play. Lopez converted the extra point as Sully trailed Southwestern, 26-24 with 3:54 left in the third.
The Lobos took the go ahead with 11:27 remaining in the closing quarter as Lopez fired off a 25-yard field goal.
Sul Ross stalled on its last offensive possession as the Pirates took advantage of two, 15-yard Lobo penalties.
With three seconds left, Fierst bingoed on his 18-yard field goal as Southwestern walked off with the 29-27 win.
For the game, the Lobos mustered 277 yards of offense while the Pirated tallied 325.
Davis completed 12 of 26 passes for 190 yards and a touchdown.
Batson netted 58 yards off of 13 carries and a score.
Freshman receiver
Darrell White (The Coloney/W.T. White) led receivers with three receptions for 64 yards.
Jacques Wisner (Dallas/Newman Smith) led defenders with 11 tackles including seven solo.
Wisner also posted three and a half stops for a loss of ten yards.
Mason recorded a fumble recovery and an interception while
Damian Espinoza (Katy/Pope John Paul) posted a break up.
Richard also notched an interception for a return of 37 yards.
Sul Ross will host Hardin-Simmons in a 6:00 p.m. contest next Saturday.
