BROWNWOOD- Howard Payne University (3-6/1-0) defeated the Sul Ross Lady Lobos (2-7/0-1) in four sets in the conference opener, Tuesday.

The Yellow Jackets claimed 25-17 and 25-8 decisions in the opening games.

Sul Ross then took a 25-21 victory in the third set before dropping the fourth game by a 25-17 margin.

The Lady Lobos took a 2-1 lead in set three with kills from Jordan Scherer (Round Rock/Cedar Ridge) and Stephanie Diaz (El Paso/El Dorado).

Several ties would follow before a pair of attack errors by Howard Payne set Sully up for an 11-9 advantage.

Both teams ran neck and neck down the stretch before Sul Ross pounced on a 6-0 run to end the set for the 25-21 win.

Autumn Kilpatrick (Sterling City/SCHS) posted 12 kills in the effort.

Mirella Thomas (San Antonio/Stevens) and Alyssa Lanahan (El Paso/Bel Air) tallied 18 digs each while McKenna Thomas (Odessa/Permian) finished with 15 stops.

Mirella Thomas sported 23 assists.

Sul Ross will host Concordia in the home opener on Friday before facing visiting Mary Hardin-Baylor Saturday. First serves are scheduled for 5:00 and 1:00 p.m.
