Caleb Thomasson (Ackerly/Sands) posted a career-best 36 points and was just two boards shy of a double double as Sul Ross (12-12, 8-7 ASC) fell to host Concordia (17-6, 11-3 ASC) 97-95 Saturday in Austin.
The Lobos will make final preparations for their second straight post season tournament berth as Sully tangles with Howard Payne in the regular season finale next Saturday at the Gallego Center.
The opening half saw a back and forth battle with Concordia maintaining a slim lead for the first six minutes of play.
A layup by
C.J. Ross (Austin/Akins) at 14:02 tied the game at 15.
The Lobos broke the tie and sported an 8-0 run ending on a layup by Thomasson at 10:25.
The Tornados fought their way to a 25-25 knotting as Joe Neal converted from long range with 7:31 left in the half.
Sul Ross broke loose and went on to lead by 11 as
Xavier Webb (Riverton, WY/RHS) bingoed on a three-point basket at 4:41.
Another three-pointer by Webb at 2:51 extended the visitor's lead to 13.
Concordia pulled to within five and trailed 42-37 at the break.
Sully held the advantage for the first four minutes of the second half before two free throws by the Tornados' Chase Brooks tied the game at 50.
Concordia broke the knot and held a handful of eight-point advantages down the stretch.
A layup and foul shot by Thomasson at 5:44 swung the lead back to the visitors.
Sul Ross posted a five-point lead at 4:46 as
Brock Anders (Keller/KHS) drained a free throw.
Concordia's Joe Neal hit a free throw with 2:47 remaining to tie the game at 85 and banked on a layup 11 seconds later for an 87-85 Tornado advantage.
Thomasson responded with a layup on the ensuing possession to tie the outing at 87.
Following a 91-91 tie at 57 seconds,
Jacob Dawson (Amarillo/AHS) converted a jumper in the paint before Concordia tied the game again at 15 seconds off of free throws by Rashad Coleman.
A missed jumper and a foul by the Lobos with one second remaining sent Phillip Meinkle to the stripe where he connected on back-to-back free throws for the 97-95 Tornado victory.
Webb secured a double double 14 points and 10 boards while Ross and
A.J. James (Springs/SHS) posted 12 and 10 points respectively.
Sul Ross finished the day at 38-of-69 shooting at 55 percent including 8-of-18 from outside the arc.
