Erica Solomon- Powell's time-expiring, three-point bucket broke a 54-54 tie and propelled Sul Ross to a 57-54 ASC victory over visiting LeTourneau (2-6, 0-3) Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Lady Lobos secure their first victory of the season at 1-6 and even their ASC mark at 1-1.
Sully took command of the first quarter with an 8-0 run midway through the period.
A jumper in the lane by
Jasmine Valdez gave the home team an eight-point lead at the 4:20 mark.
The Lady Jackets narrowed the gap to two, 14-12 at 1:57 before
Lizette Heredia capped a 7-0 Sul Ross run giving the home team a 20-12 advantage heading to the second quarter.
A long range bucket by
Taylor Gass at 6:53 started a quick 4-0 sprint resulting in a 24-17 Lady Lobo lead.
Powell then knocked down a three-point shot at 2:57 extending Sully's lead to eight, 27-19.
LeTourneau ended the quarter on a 4-0 run and trailed 27-22 at intermission.
Powell converted again from long range to spread the lead to eight to begin the third period.
A floater by Gass two possessions later at 7:37 gave the Lady Lobos their first double digit lead of the game.
Gass then capped a 7-0 on a mid range jump shot for a 39-26 Sul Ross lead with 5:18 remaining in the third quarter.
The Lady Lobos would maintain a double digit lead for the remainder of the quarter and went to the closing period up 46-35.
The Jackets started the fourth quarter with a 9-2 run and tied the game at 48 with 4:30 left in the game.
A free throw by LeTourneau's Ashley Reed gave the visitors a short-lived 49-48 lead at 3:33.
Powell then connected on a layup at 3:05 swinging the lead back to Sul Ross.
The Lady Lobos would go on to sport two, three-point leads including a 54-51 advantage with just under a minute left in regulation.
A three-pointer by the Jackets' Jaila Leaven tied the contest at 54 with just three seconds left in the game.
Following a Lady Lobo timeout,
Lizette Heredia triggered an inbounds pass to Powell who fired off the game-winning bucket as the buzzer sounded.
For the game, Powell and Valdez posted 11 points each while
Angalyn Latin secured a team-best 12 points. Gass led the team with nine rebounds.
Sul Ross will host East Texas Baptist University at 5:30 p.m. Monday evening.
