ALPINE, Texas- A second half rally fell just short as the Sul Ross Lady Lobos (0-6) dropped a 59-57 non-conference outing to
Schreiner University (2-3) in Sully's home opener Wednesday.
Erica Solomon- Powell (Conroe/CHS) scored a team-best and season-high 22 points in the effort and added four rebounds.
Sully scored the first bucket 11 seconds into the game on a layup by
Angalyn Latin (Houston/Jersey Village) before the Mountaineers tied the contest two possessions later.
A pair of free throws by Schreiner's Kendra Brown knotted the game at six with 6:33 left in the first quarter.
The visitors then commenced on a 6-1 run to take a 14-7 advantage at 2:14.
A three-point jumper by Powell with four seconds remaining trimmed Schreiner's lead to three, 16-13, heading to the second period.
The Mountaineers then pounced on a 9-0 run to claim their largest lead of the game, up 26-13 with 5:27 left before the half.
Two free throws by Latin at 1:59 narrowed the Lady Lobos' deficit to nine before a three-pointer by Schreiner's Gabriella Irwin extended the Mountaineers lead back to double digits at 57 seconds.
Taylor Gass (Gail/Borden County) then drained a long range jump shot at 11 seconds as Sul Ross went to the break trailing 33-22.
Schreiner held a double digit lead for a majority of the third quarter.
A midrange jumper by Powell ended an 8-0 Lady Lobo run and pulled the home squad to within four, trailing 47-43 heading to the closing period.
Kiera Cosby's (North Zulch/Blinn JC) long range shot at 8:57 cut the Lady Lobo deficit to one before the Mountaineers broke ahead with a 5-0 run.
Sul Ross battled down the stretch until a fast break layup by Gass cut Schreiner's lead back to one at 52 seconds.
The Mountaineers survived a resilient Lady Lobo effort as two free throws by Brown moved the Mountaineers ahead, 59-55 at 25 seconds.
Latin would clear the final bucket of the contest on a layup ten seconds later. A steal by Gass with eight seconds remaining set up a jumper at the elbow by Latin that fell just short as Schreiner prevailed for the 59-57 victory.
Gass and Latin finished the evening with 17 and ten points respectively while Gass led rebounders with seven boards.
Sully returns to ASC action this Saturday with a 2:00 pm. tip against visiting LeTourneau.
