Taylor Gass posted a double double 19 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Sul Ross women's basketball team to a 75-62 bruising of University of Dallas New Year's Eve in Irving.
Saturday's performance was a season-high for Gass as the junior guard also contributed four assists and five steals.
A 4-0 run by the Crusaders to start the game was answered with back-to-back three-pointers by
Lizette Heredia and
Kiera Cosby.
Dallas would hold a brief lead before a pull up jumper by Gass started a 5-0 Lady Lobo run.
Erica Solomon- Powell nailed a three-point bucket giving Sully a 16-10 lead with 2:51 left in the first quarter.
The Crusaders narrowed their deficit to two at 1:54 off a layup by Michelle DeCoud before Powell converted the first of two free throws for a 17-14 Sul Ross advantage heading to the second period.
The Lady Lobos fired off another 5-0 run to begin the second quarter as Heredia capped the drive with a foul shot at the 7:24 mark.
The visitors then broke into a double digit lead as Powell drained a long range jumper for a 30-20 lead at 5:41.
Dallas pulled to within a pair of five-point deficits before Sully's
Annie Lenoir scored on a long range bucket at 32 seconds for 37-29 Sul Ross lead heading to the half.
Sul Ross held the momentum in the third quarter although the Crusaders slipped to within three, three-point deficits including a 51-48 margin to close the period.
A three-pointer by Gass, 40 seconds into the closing quarter, kick-started another 5-0 Sul Ross run which culminated with a three-point shot by Lenoire at 8:40 for a 59-48 Lady Lobo lead.
A free throw by
Angalyn Latin at the 5:46 mark gave Sully its largest lead of 14, up 63-49.
The Lady Lobos kept their double digit lead for the remainder of the contest and ended the game with two foul shots from Gass for the 75-62 victory.
Powell and Lenoire posted 16 and 10 points respectively in Saturday's win.
Gass went 7-for-8 from the charity stripe against the Crusaders while Latin finished at 5-for-6.
The Lady Lobos sported a season-best 42 percent shooting from three-point distance at 11-of-26 and converted 16-of-22 from the free throw line at 73 percent.
Sully improves to 4-9 on the season while University of Dallas falls to 5-6.
The Lady Lobos return to American Southwest Conference action January 4 and 6 as University of the Ozarks and U.T. Tyler come to the Gallego Center for 5:30 and 2:00 p.m. contests.
