Sul Ross women defeat Belhaven, 83-80 in OT

JACKSON, Miss.- Sul Ross women's basketball held on and claimed an 83-80 overtime victory over Belhaven University Saturday in Jackson, Mississippi.

Erica Solomon- Powell scored a team-high and second season-best 21 points in the win. Powell reached 22 points back on December 6 in a 59-57 loss to Schreiner at the Gallego Center.

The Blazers started the game with a 4-0 run which was answered as Lizette Heredia's layup tied the outing at four with 6:15 left in the opening quarter.

Another tie would follow before Belhaven erupted on a 10-0 run to take a 16-6 lead at the 2:46 mark.

Sul Ross battled its way down to a two-point deficit as Taylor Gass connected from three-point range at 25 seconds with the Blazers sporting a 17-15 advantage heading to the second period.

Another three-point basket, this time by freshman Jessy Stanley, gave the Lady Lobos an 18-17 lead 30 seconds into the second quarter.

Two free throws by the Blazers' Lauren Brooks returned the lead back the home team before Sully's Kiera Cosby drained a three-pointer at 8:03 for a 21-19 Lady Lobo lead.

Three ties would ensue before another three-point bucket by Cosby put Sul Ross ahead, 32-28 at the two-minute mark.

Powell would finish up with two foul shots at 53 seconds and converted another at 18 seconds for a 35-31 Lady Lobo lead at the half.

Heredia would score on a layup 13 seconds into the third quarter extending Sully's lead to six. A Belhaven foul sent Heredia to the stripe where she completed an old fashioned three for a 38-31 lead for the visitors.

A three-pointer by Powell at 9:06 finished off a 5-0 run and spread the Sul Ross lead to eight, 43-35.

Angalyn Latin's layup gave the Lady Lobos their largest lead of the game, a nine-point 52-43 advantage at 3:22.

Gass would score the final basket of the quarter for the visitors on a short range jumper from the lane line at 53 seconds.

Belhaven's Alexis Caldwell converted the final field goal of the period at 37 seconds as the Blazers trailed 55-50 moving to the fourth quarter.

The Blazers would take the lead off a three-pointer by Brittany Ford with 9:11 remaining in regulation and Belhaven ahead, 58-57.

Gass would then hit a pair of free throws at 6:38 returning the lead back to the Lady Lobos, 60-59.

A layup by Ford at 4:35 gave the home squad the go ahead sporting a 63-60 advantage.

With less than 30 seconds left in regulation, Caldwell banked on a pair of free throws for a 73-71 Belhaven lead.

Annie Lenoir then tied the game with a layup at 12 seconds setting up the five-minute overtime slot.

A layup by Powell at the 4:05 mark broke the tie before Brooks was sent to the line to convert a free throw narrowing the Sul Ross lead to one at 3:00.

Sul Ross then capped a 5-0 run with a foul shot by Lenoir at 2:32 giving the Lady Lobos an 80-74 lead.

Belhaven cut its deficit to two, 82-80 at 1:52 before a three-point foul sent the Blazers' Aaliyaha Thornton to the free throw line with just four seconds left on the clock.

Thornton hit the first two shots but missed the third before Kelsey Brown fouled Stanley with three seconds remaining.

Stanley secured the victory with two free throws as time expired before Thornton could fire off the desperation toss.

Latin tallied 16 points in Saturday's victory while Gass posted 12 points. Lenoir finished with 10.

Sul Ross finished with a season-best 45 percent shooting at 29-of-64.

The Lady Lobos improve to 2-8 on the season and 2-3 in ASC play. Belhaven drops to 0-9 and 0-4.

Sully will host NCAA Division II U.T. Permian Basin on Tuesday. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. at the Gallego Center.
