Volleyball drops 3-2 heartbreaker to HPU

ALPINE, Texas- Autumn Kilpatrick (Sterling City/SCHS) and Jordan Scherer (Round Rock/Cedar Ridge) sported 14 and 10 kills respectively as Sul Ross (2-17, 0-9) fell in a five-set match to visiting Howard Payne (7-11, 5-4) Tuesday evening. 

The Yellow Jackets  picked up the first win in a 25-21 decision before Sully answered with a 25-23 victory in set two. Howard Payne regrouped and held off a resilient Lady Lobo assault and claimed a 26-24 win in the third game.

Sul Ross won the fourth set edging the visitors, 25-23 before bowing out in the closing game, 15-9.

The Lady Lobos rallied from a pair of two-point deficits in game two and broke a 10-10 tie off a faulty set by Howard Payne.

A kill by Stephanie Diaz (El Paso/El Dorado) ended a 6-0 Sul Ross run and spread the gap by a 10-6 margin.

Howard Payne crept to a 21-21 tie off a ball handling error.

Scherer broke the knot with a kill before ending the set with another scoring punch off an assist by Alesi Hernandez (Odessa/OHS).

In game four, a service ace by Mirella Thomas (San Antonio/Stevens) gave the home squad a 10-8 advantage.

Several ties and lead exchanges would follow throughout the set as Scherer picked up her second game-point kill giving Sully the 25-23 victory.

For the match, Thomas posted two aces while Kilpatrick tallied five blocks .

Hernandez and Thomas supplied 19 and 15 assists.

Three Lady Lobos sported double figures in digs as McKenna Thomas (Odessa/Permian) led the charge with a season-high 30. Sophomore libero Hannah Zly (Killeen/Ellison) aided the backline with 22 scoops while Mirella Thomas added 15.

Sul Ross will face Trinity University in a non-ASC match Friday in Belton before battling Mary Hardin-Baylor that evening. First serves are scheduled for 1:30 and 6:30 p.m.
