JACKSON, Ms.- Bayli Bowles (Roosevelt/RHS) led with 14 points but Sul Ross (6-9) could not overcome a sluggish start dropping a 62-49 non-conference decision to Belhaven University (8-5) Saturday in Jackson.

The Lady Lobos will take on McMurry in a 5:30 p.m. ASC bout Thursday in Abilene.

The Blazers struck hard on a 9-0 to begin the first quarter.

A layup by Katy Boren (Lubbock/Cooper) broke Sully into double digits trailing 23-10 at 1:36.

Boren's bucket would also mark the final score of the period as Belhaven sported a 25-10 advantage heading to the second.

The Lady Lobos battled their way through the second quarter down to a single-digit deficit and ended the half on a 6-0 down 35-26.

A layup by Bowles with 7:19 left in the third period cut the Blazer lead to three, 36-33.

Ashley Ousley (Killeen/Shoemaker) beat the buzzer on a layup to end the quarter with Belhaven ahead, 47-44. 

The Blazers held Sul Ross to a pair of three-point margins in the fourth quarter but erupted on a 10-0 run to end the game and claim the 62-49 victory.

Ellyn Avery (Grady/GHS) bagged eight points in the effort while Avery Gregory (Lubbock/Cooper) posted a team-high 10 rebounds.

As a team Sul Ross shot 19-of-62 from the field against the Blazers at 31 percent. The Lady Lobos struggled from beyond the arc connecting on just two of 20 at 10 percent shooting.
