ABILENE- Sophomore forward
Bayli Bowles (Roosevelt/RHS) led the charge with 15 points as Sul Ross (7-9, 4-3 ASC) returned to the winning track with a thrilling 67-64 ASC overtime victory against McMurry University (5-10, 1-6 ASC) Thursday at Kimbrell Arena.
The Lady Lobos remain in Abilene for a 1:00 p.m. conference outing Saturday at Hardin-Simmons.
The War Hawks started the game with a 6-0 run before
Avery Gregory (Lubbock/Cooper) scored the first bucket with 6:29 remaining in the first period.
Sul Ross battled through the quarter but was never able to collect a go ahead and trailed by two possessions down 16-12 as Gregory hit a jumper in the paint in the closing seconds.
Ellyn Avery (Grady/GHS) fired a three-pointer just eight seconds into the second quarter and pulled the visitors to within one.
A layup by
Katy Boren (Lubbock/Cooper) gave Sully its first lead of the game at 7:46 before the War Hawks reclaimed the favor and held the advantage for the next five minutes.
A short range jumper by
Kenya Miles (Tomball/Memorial) tied the contest at 22 before Bowles hit a fast break scooper at 1:58 for a 24-22 Lady Lobo lead.
Bowles then followed up with a free throw which started a 5-0 run.
Bowles would connect on another layup at 12 seconds before McMurry's Skyler Reyna drained a foul shot for a 32-25 Sul Ross lead heading to intermission.
A jump shot by Boren began a 4-0 sprint as Sully would boast a 13-point, 38-25 favor with 6:50 left in the third period.
The Lady Lobos would go on to sport three, 15-point leads including a 48-33 advantage heading to the fourth.
The visitors would hold a double digit lead for a majority of the closing period before McMurry closed the gap in the last two minutes and tied the game at 60 off a three-pointer by Kaymee Howell
with one second left on the clock.
Kendra Walls (Rochelle/RHS) nailed the first bucket in the overtime slot to break the stalemate.
The War Hawks tied the game twice but were never able to regain the favor as Avery hit a pair of jumpers leading to the 67-64 win.
Avery was a rebound shy of a double double and posted 11 points while Walls finished with 10.
Sul Ross finished the night hitting 29-of-63 shots from the field good for 46 percent.
