PREVIEW
Sul Ross State University Women's (6-7, 3-2 ASC) and Men's Basketball (7-6, 4-1 ASC) return to American Southwest Conference play this Thursday with games against Louisiana College. The conference doubleheader gets underway at 5:30 p.m. at Prather Coliseum on the campus of Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana.
Sul Ross then treks eastward for a Saturday non-conference matinee with the Belhaven Blazers.
Women's Individual and Team Notes
- Ellyn Avery (Grady/GHS) leads the Pack and is the 17th-leading scorer in the ASC averaging 12 points per contest. Avery ranks second in assists averaging 4.2 per game.
- Avery is also the ninth-leading free throw shooter in the conference connecting on 33 of 43 shots from the stripe for a percentage of .767.
- Sophomore forward Kenya Miles (Tomball/Memorial) ranks eighth in the league averaging 7.8 rebounds per game.
- Katy Boren (Lubbock/Cooper) ranks second in the ASC in converted three-pointers at 13 of 42.
- As a team, the Sul Ross women are second in the conference in three-point shooting percentage hitting 117 of 351 attempts from outside the arc at .333.
Women's Recap
Sul Ross dropped a pair of road decisions last week to scholarship institutions.
Sully dropped a 106-58 decision to NCAA Division I Abilene Christian University (6-6) at ACU's Moody Coliseum Wednesday before falling to Division II Eastern New Mexico, 82-46 on Friday.
Against ACU, Avery and
Kendra Walls (Rochelle/RHS) led the team with 12 points each.
Avery was just one rebound short of a double double in the effort and tied teammate Miles with a team-best four assists.
Against ENMU, Miles scored a double double 10 points and 13 rebounds. Sul Ross finished the game with ENMU shooting a frigid 15-of-61 from the floor at 25 percent.
Avery and
Hannah Carr (Wall/WHS) posted nine points each in the effort.
Miles recorded a pair of blocks and a steal while Avery and
Bayli Bowles (Roosevelt/RHS) shouldered a pair of steals each.
Men's Individual and Team Notes
- Caleb Thomasson (Ackerly/Sands) ranks sixth in the ASC in scoring averaging 17.5 points per game.
- Thomasson has posted seven conecutive double doubles this season...the last coming in a 60-58 victory over U.T. Dallas on December 19.
- Thomasson ranks fourth in the conference in rebounding averaging 8.4 boards per contest.
- Thomasson sits with 22 blocked shots which ranks fifth in the league.
- Jacob Dawson (Amarillo/AHS) ranks fifth in the ASC averaging 4.5 assists per game.
- Sul Ross ranks second in the conference in scoring defense and averages 74 points per contest.
- The Lobos are third in offensive rebounds averaging 41 offensive boards per game.
- As a team Sully ranks second in assists averaging 17.3 per game.
Men's Recap
The Lobos split a pair of non-conference road matches last week at the Crusader Classic in Belton.
Sul Ross defeated Rust College, 74-71 on Thursday before falling to Elmhurst College, 71-64 to close out the tournament on Friday.
Against Rust,
Xavier Webb (Riverton, WY/RHS) finished with a team-high 17 points.
Brock Anders (Keller/KHS) posted 11 points on the afternoon while Thomasson and Dawson recorded 10 points each.
The Lobos finished with three players in double figures led by Thomasson's 20 points in the loss to Elmhurst.
Anders and
C.J. Ross (Austin/Akins) supplied 15 and 10 points in the effort.
The Lobos finished the game at 22-of-53 shooting good for 42 percent.
