BROWNWOOD- Caleb Thomasson (Ackerly/Sands) accounted for 27 points and 14 rebounds to lead Sul Ross (10-10, 6-5 ASC) in a 77-73 conference win over Howard Payne (11-8, 7-4 ASC) Saturday in Brownwood.

The Lobos will host Hardin-Simmons and McMurry next Thursday and Saturday.

Thomasson scored the first bucket on a layup 50 seconds into the contest.

The Jackdes tied the game on the ensuing possession and held a brief lead.

Brock Anders (Keller/KHS) converted a short range jumper at the 16 minute mark to tie the game at four before nailing a free throw to complete an old school three-point play.

Following a 5-5 tie Howard Payne sported a 7-0 run and led 12-7 at 14:32.

A layup by Thomasson with 12:20 remaining in the half swung the lead back to Sul Ross, 16-15.

The Lobos would go on to hold a pair of eight-point leads before closing the half on the second of two three pointers by Thomasson for a 37-28 advantage.

Sully started the second half with a 6-0 run which ended on a jumper by Jacob Dawson (Amarillo/AHS) at 16:14.

The Jackets then responded with a 7-0 run and trailed 45-41 with 13:32 left regulation.

Anders then fired off back-to-back three-point buckets capping a 7-0 run at 7:40.

HPU pulled to within six with just over four minutes remaining before Thomasson connected on two foul shots for a 68-60 Sul Ross lead at 3:14.

The Lobos would hold a nine-point lead at 2:17 with a two-point bucket by Xavier Webb (Riverton, WY/RHS).

Sul Ross held the home team to three, three-point margins.before Dawson canned a free throw at four seconds to seal the 77-73 Lobo victory.

Anders finished the day with 17 points while Dawson posted nine.

The Lobos wrapped up the day at 28-of-57 shooting from the floor at 49 percent.
