AUSTIN- Brittany Serrano (Marfa/MHS) was a kill shy of a double double with nine kills and 10 digs as Sul Ross swept LeTourneau, 3-0 in day one of the ASC cross division tournament Friday at Concordia University.
The victory moves the Lady Lobos to 2-11 on the season and 1-2 in American Southwest Conference play. The Jackets fall to 6-9 and 0-2. Sul Ross will face East Division powerhouse U.T. Dallas at 10 a.m. Saturday to close out the tournament.
McKenna Thomas (Odessa/Permian) notched 10 digs to tie Serrano in Friday's win while fellow Permian grad Katie Reeves posted 18 assists.
The Lady Lobos recorded a 4-0 run early in the opening set and went on to beat LeTourneau, 25-20.
In game two, the Lady Lobos sported another 4-0 run that ended on a kill by Serrano with a Reeves assist.
Sully pounded away on a 6-0 run and led 20-8 off a LeTourneau attack error.
The Yellow Jackets crept to within two trailing 23-21 before Kayla LaRue (Kingwood/Porter) secured the Sul Ross victory off a kill with an assist by Nina Sterling (San Marcos/SMHS) for a 25-22 final score.
LeTourneau scored the first two points in the closing game before the Lady Lobos moved on three unanswered scoring runs.
A Reeves set up allowed Candice Hugi (Marysville, CA/MHS) to nail the final kill as Sul Ross secured the final set win, 25-19.
