ALPINE, Texas- Arizona Christian's Gerrit Groenewo scored from six yards out in overtime handing the visiting Firestorm a 30-27 victory over Sul Ross in the Lobos' home opener Saturday evening.

The defeat drops Sully to 1-2 on the season while ACU evens their season at 1-1. The Lobos will take next weekend off before opening ASC play on October 1 in Abilene against Hardin-Simmons University.

Sul Ross recorded the opening score with 10:49 left in the first period as James Davis (Houston/South) trucked 11 yards into the end zone finishing a 10-play, 78-yard march. Adam Cruz (Canutillo/CHS) tacked on the extra point kick for a 7-0 Lobo lead.

The Firestorm answered with back-to-back scores, the first off a three-yard run by Quinta Thomas. Derek Brush's point-after kick tied the game at seven with 7:45 remaining in the opening quarter.

Brush added a 33-yard field goal at 12:38.

Davis then called on Jeremy Reed (Grandview, MO/GHS) for a 34-yard touchdown strike at the 10:49 mark, second quarter. Cruz added the extra point kick for a 14-10 Sul Ross lead.

Cruz ended the half for the Lobos on a time expiring, 42-yard field goal.

With 11:27 to go in the third ACU's Damario Fair trotted three yards for a score. Brush knotted the contest with the extra point attempt.

Davis connected with Reed again, this time from nine yards out before Cruz added the extra point giving Sully a 24-17 advantage with 6:05 left in the third quarter.

Groenewo then found Justin Carroll on a three-yard scoring pitch with 31 seconds remaining in regulation. Brush converted the point after kick to tie the game at 24.

A missed 21-yard field goal by Brush with one second remaining sent the game to overtime.

Cruz nailed the second of his two field goals from 36 yards away six plays into the opening possession of overtime.

It took four plays to set up Groenewo's six-yard touchdown run for the win.
