Volleyball falls to LETU, AC to begin 2016

SHERMAN-The 2016 season got off to a rough start for the Sul Ross volleyball team Thursday as the Lady Lobos dropped a pair of matches to LeTourneau and Austin College in tournament action in Sherman.

Following a 3-0 shutout to the Yellow Jackets Sul Ross suffered another 3-0 setback to tournament host Austin College to begin the season at 0-2.

rittany Serrano (Marfa/MHS) led the charge in the opening match with 10 kills with 13 assists supplied by Kayla LaRue (Kingwood/Porter). McKenna Jane Thomas (Odessa/Permian) posted 17 digs to lead the defense.

Sul Ross dropped the first set to LeTourneau in a 25-14 decision. Sully was edged in a pair of two-point games, 29-27 and 27-25 handing the Yellow Jackets the 3-0 sweep. LeTourneau held a brief lead to begin the second set but Sully mounted an 8-0 run that ended on a kill by Serrano off a LaRue assist. A kill by Allison Muldrow (Crosby/CHS) put Sully ahead 20-12 before a 16-7 rally by the oppostition handed the Jackets the 29-27 win.

In game three of Thursday's opener Serrano posted a kill to tie the set at 10 but the Lady Lobos were never able to acquire the lead as LeTourneau held on down the stretch for the 27-25 final.

Sul Ross shouldered a cold .098 attack percetage against Austin College falling in game one, 25-9. The Kangaroos held  commanding leads throughout the final two sets in scores of 25-16 and 25-19.

Katie Reeves (Odessa/Permian) managed 12 assists with 13 digs added by fellow Permian grad Thomas.

Sul Ross will face Centenary and Pacific University Friday in the second day of the three-day Austin College Classic. First serves are scheduled for noon and 4:00 p.m.
