SRSU StatsSporting a four-game winning streak and sole possession of first place in the American Southwest Conference West Division, the Sul Ross men's basketball team will put the wraps on a successful home season run this week as the Lobos entertain Mary Hardin-Baylor and Concordia.
The Lobos need two wins out of their next three regular season games in order to clinch the West and host this year's ASC tournament.
Sul Ross (13-8, 8-3 ASC) reached a 10-year milestone Saturday following a 72-64 win at McMurry. The victory marks the first time since 2005-06 that the Lobo men have reached 13 wins when former coach Doug Davalos posted a 13-13 record.
Sully is 7-3 at the Gallego Center this season and currently sits with a three-game home winning streak.
RECAPCaleb Thomasson (Ackerly/Sands) finished with a double double 18 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Sul Ross men's basketball team to a 72-64 victory over McMurry Saturday at Kimbrell Arena.
Saturday's win against the War Hawks marks the first time in 10 seasons the Lobos have reached 13 season victories as Doug Davalos's 2005-06 team finished with a 13-13 record.
For the second game in a row Sul Ross has posted a player with a perfect showing at the free throw line.
Following Rocky Feliciano's (El Paso/Hanks) 13-13 finish Thursday at Hardin-Simmons, Thomasson recorded a 10 for 10 performance at the charity stripe against the War Hawks.
Freshman Brock Anders (Keller/KHS) and Feliciano tallied 13 and 10 points respectively for the afternoon.
Two nights before, Sul Ross recorded five players in double figures to claim a thrilling 108-98 conference win over host Hardin-Simmons in a jammed-packed Mabee Complex.
Feliciano and Alex Harrison (Lubbock/Monterey) led the charge scoring 24 points each. Feliciano helped the Lobos to a 95 percent shooting performance from the free throw line as the Sul Ross senior hit 100 percent from the stripe (13-13) for the third time this season.
Thomasson and Xavier Webb (Riverton,WY/RHS) picked up 19 and 15 points respectively in the win.
Jacob Dawson (Amarillo/AHS) supplied 12 points while Thomasson reached eight rebounds.
LAST MEETING: Jan. 23, 2016, SRSU-85, UMHB-75 @ BeltonSul Ross scored 60 points in the second half and rallied to defeat the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, 85-75 at the Mayborn Campus Center.
Harrison scored a season high 24 points and collected 11 rebounds for a double double.
Thomasson also posted a double double 19 points and 13 boards while Anders and Feliciano supplied 20 and 13 points respectively.
The Lobos shot lights-out basketball in the second half nailing 17 of 25 from the field at 68 percent and finished the day at 48 percent shooting.
Sully converted an astounding eight of 10 from outside the arc in the second half and converted nine of 18 three-pointers for the contest.
LAST MEETING: Jan. 21, 2016, CTC-106, SRSU-96 @ AustinAnders scored a team best and season high 20 points as Sul Ross dropped a 106-96 American Southwest Conference game to Concordia in Austin.
Dawson put up 17 points for the Lobos while Harrison, Thomasson and Webb scored 16, 12 and 11 points respectively in the effort.
Sully left several points at the free throw line finishing at 23 of 43 or 54 percent. The Lobos finished the evening shooting 35-65 or 54 percent from the floor which tied their performance
at the foul line.
UMHB TEAM NOTES- The Crusaders (7-14, 3-8) are a game behind Howard Payne for the fourth slot in the ASC West Division.
- UMHB is on a two-game skid following back-to-back losses to U.T. Dallas and Concordia.
- As a team the Crusaders rank fourth in the ASC in scoring offense averaging 82.6 points per contest.
- Mary Hardin-Baylor sports the best free throw percentage in the conference at .735 (442-601).
- Daniel Mills and Demarius Cress rank ninth and tenth out of the top 20 scorers in the league averaging 15.8 and 15.4 points per game respectively.
- Russell Green is tied at No. 10 in rebounds out of the top 20. Green and Ozarks' Dylan Gray are averaging 7.1 boards per game.
- Mills ranks second out of the top 14 in free throw percentage at .862 (106-123).
