Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Sul Ross holds off McMurry for 72-64 win

Lobos reach 13-win mark for first time since 2005-06

ABILENE- Caleb Thomasson (Ackerly/Sands) finished with a double double 18 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Sul Ross men's basketball team to a 72-64 victory over McMurry Saturday at Kimbrell Arena.

Saturday's win against the War Hawks marks the first time in 10 seasons the Lobos have reached 13 season victories as Doug Davalos's 2005-06 team finished with a 13-13 record.

For the second game in a row Sul Ross has posted a player with a perfect showing at the free throw line.

Following Rocky Feliciano's (El Paso/Hanks) 13-13 finish Thursday at Hardin-Simmons, Thomasson recorded a 10 for 10 performance at the charity stripe against the War Hawks.

Freshman Brock Anders (Keller/KHS) and Feliciano tallied 13 and 10 points respectively for the afternoon.

The Lobos shot 41 percent from the floor against McMurry and, with help from Thomasson, finished at 18 of 22 from the line good for 82 percent.

The War Hawks had an early jump and led Sul Ross for the first four minutes of the game before the Lobos closed in with 5-0 run to take the go ahead leading 9-8 with 14:55 remaining in the first half.

Sully then erupted with a 12-0 barrage ending on a midrange jump shot by Feliciano giving the visiting Lobos a 25-12 lead at 9:33.

McMurry closed the gap to six with a pair of free throws by Blake Cochran at 6:18 before Sul Ross broke into another double digit lead off a fast break dunk by Anders at 4:03.

The Lobos ended the half on another 5-0 run culminating in a three-pointer by Feliciano as Sul Ross went to the break leading 36-25.

Sully spread the gap to 17 off yet another 5-0 sprint that ended with a three-ball by Anders at the 18:51 second half mark and the visitors leading 42-25.

The Lobos would go on to hold a pair of 22-point leads before McMurry crept its way down to a five-point deficit, 56-51, with 7:25 left in the contest.

The War Hawks would later pull to within two, three times down the stretch before Sul Ross used a 6-0 run to add some cushion for the 72-64 victory.

Sully improves to 13-8 on the season and remains a game ahead of Hardin-Simmons for the lead in the Conference West.

The Lobos will close out the home regular season this Thursday and Saturday as Mary Hardin-Baylor and Concordia visit the Gallego Center for 7:30 and 3:00 p.m. tipoffs.
