ALPINE, Texas- A buzzer-beating shot just short of mid court by
Jacob Dawson (Amarillo/AHS) propelled Sul Ross (3-4) to a 76-74 heart-stopping, overtime victory against visiting University of the Southwest (5-4) Monday night.
The Lobos will return to American Southwest Conference play Thursday at East Texas Baptist University.
Following a nearly two minute scoring drought
Damien Rhodriquez (San Antonio/John Jay) converted the first bucket of the ball game for either team.
The Mustangs took a brief lead before Rhodriquez banked on another jumper followed by two free throws by
Brock Anders (Keller/KHS) giving Sully a 6-5 go ahead at the 15:06 mark, first half.
Sul Ross would hold the advantage for almost a two-minute spread before Southwest broke a 15-15 tie off a foul shot by Ralph Cueto at 6:23.
Southwest would go on to sport an eight-point lead down the stretch of the half before
Caleb Thomasson (Ackerly/Sands) hit a time-expiring jumper in the paint cutting the Lobo deficit to six, 30-24.
Sully held the Mustangs to a seven-point lead early in the second half before slowly battling its way to a 60-60 tie as Thomasson converted from short range at 5:04.
A series of lead swaps followed before
C.J. Ross (Austin/Akins) nailed the final bucket in the closing moments of regulation for a 67-67 tie.
Ross broke the stalemate at 4:43 in overtime with a free throw.
The Lobos would then hold a pair of three-point leads off of buckets by Ross and Rhodriquez nearly a minute apart.
USW's David Blaylock drained a fast break three-pointer at 1:25 for a 72-72 tie.
Dawson then headed to the line to bingo on a foul shot before the Mustangs' Jim Coleman hit a midrange jumper at 29 seconds giving the visitors a 74-73 advantage.
Rhodriquez snagged a defensive rebound off a missed free throw by USW at eight seconds before making a quick pass to Dawson who fired off the game-winning shot.
Thomasson and Ross led the team with eight points apiece while Anders supplied 13.
Thomasson secured his third consecutive double double with 13 boards in the victory.
