ALPINE, Texas- The Sul Ross men's basketball team (6-5, 4-1 ASC) saw a halftime lead slip away but battled back with some late-game heroics for a 60-58 ASC victory over visiting U.T. Dallas (1-8, 1-3 ASC) at the Gallego Center Monday afternoon.
The Lobos will face Rust College and Elmhurst College December 29 and 30 at the Crusader Classic in Belton.
Sully put up four, unanswered points to begin the contest.
A layup by the Comets' Ben Smith tied the game at seven with 12:37 remaining in the first half.
A quick break scooper by
C.J. Ross (Austin/Akins) on the ensuing possession broke the knot and began a 5-0 run that ended on a dunk by Ross at 10:05.
Another 4-0 run by the home squad ended on a layup by
Caleb Thomasson (Ackerly/Sands) at 2:49 for a 28-16 Sul Ross advantage.
Xavier Webb's (Riverton/WY/RHS) jumper in the paint at 50 seconds secured a 31-24 lead heading to intermission.
Thomasson kick-started the second period with a short range bucket extending Sully's lead to nine but it would be the only points scored by the Lobos for the next three-and-a-half minutes as the Comets posted a 10-0 run and led 34-33 with 15:31 left in the game.
U.T. Dallas would go on to lead by as many as eight before Sul Ross chipped away at the deficit as Webb hit a three-point shot at 2:53 for a 52-50 Lobo lead.
A three-point jumper by
A.J. James (Spring/SHS) 18 seconds later pushed Sul Ross ahead by five.
The Comets battled their way to a two-point deficit as Caleb Banks connected from long range with 52 seconds remaining.
A pair of foul shots by Thomasson followed as the Lobos moved ahead by three at 36 seconds.
UTD's Jon Hatcher then cleared a three-pointer with 10 seconds left before Thomasson was sent back to the line where he banked on the first of two free throws.
A desperation toss by U.T. Dallas tipped the front of the rim as Sully held on for the 60-58 victory.
Thomasson bagged his seventh consecutive double double with 19 points and 13 rebounds. He also led the team with six assists and totaled three blocks.
Brock Anders (Keller/KHS) shouldered 11 points while Ross pulled down 11 boards.
