PLAINVIEW- A second half Lobo rally sent the game to overtime but Wayland Baptist University (9-3) prevailed in a 102-99 win over visiting Sul Ross (4-5) Saturday in Plainview.
Sully will return to East Texas Tuesday for a 6:30 p.m. exhibition in Huntsville against Sam Houston State.
The Lobos tied the game at five with 18:44 left in the first half as
C.J. Ross (Austin/Akins) scored on a layup but the Pioneers quickly broke the knot and never surrendered the lead throughout the remainder of the period.
A.J. James (Spring/SHS) canned a three-point bucket at 14:59 narrowing the Sul Ross deficit to one.
Wayland Baptist then forced an 11-0 run over nearly an eight-minute stretch for a 38-25 lead.
Sul Ross cut the Pioneer lead to three as James connected from long range at 27 seconds.
WBU's Joshua Throns answered with a long range bucket of his own at four seconds as the Pioneers went to the break up 43-37.
A 6-0 second half run by the home team propelled Wayland Baptist to a 65-52 advantage with 14:13 remaining in regulation.
The Lobos slowly broke their deficit down and tied the game at 67 as
Caleb Thomasson (Ackerly/Sands) hit a jump shot in the lane at 9:04.
James then went coast-to-coast on a quick break layup off a defensive board by Thomasson giving Sully a 69-67 favor.
Following a 69-69 tie at 8:29, the Pioneers' Russell Harrison put WBU up by a deuce with a pair of foul shots.
A layup by Thomasson at 7:59 tied the game again.
The two teams tussled for the lead over the next eight minutes with several ties resulting in the process.
Ross bingoed on three free throws over two trips to the line giving the Lobos an 87-84 lead at 27 seconds.
WBU's Rueben Lopez fired off a three-point play in the closing seconds sending the contest to overtime with a 87-87 stalemate.
Following a free throw by the home team's Marshall Nelson, Ross returned for a converted foul shot to tie the game at 88 with 3:59 left in the extra frame.

Thomasson notched his fifth consecutive double double with 19 points and 10 boards while
Brock Anders shouldered 17 points.
Sully finished the day shooting 36 of 84 from the floor at 43 percent including 11 of 33 from three-point range.
