Women's basketball upsets No. 3 Texas-Tyler, 67-66

ALPINE, Texas- Katy Boren (Lubbock/Cooper) saddled 15 points and was red-hot from three-point distance at 5-of-8 shooting to lead Sul Ross (4-1, 1-0 ASC) to a thrilling 67-66 ASC opening victory over No. 3 U.T. Tyler (5-1, 0-1 ASC) at the Gallego Center Thursday.

Sul Ross snapped a 32-game conference winning streak by the Patriots and will host LeTourneau at 1:00 p.m. Saturday.

U.T. Tyler put up an 8-2 run to start the game and mounted a 16-point surge ending at the 2:56 mark, first quarter.

Patriot All-American Michelle Obach launched a 15-footer from the elbow to give U.T.T. a 23-9 advantage heading to the second period.

Sul Ross broke into double digits at 9:24 as Kenya Miles (Tomball/Memorial) scored on a layup for a 23-11 margin.

The Lady Lobos then pulled a 7-0 run ending with a three-point bucket by Lindsey Hearn (Lubbock/Lubbock Christian HS) and trailed the Patriots, 23-19 with seven minutes left before the break.

Boren fired back-to-back three balls to knot the outing at 25 at 5:30.

Another three-pointer by Hearn at the 5:00 post put the Lady Lobos ahead by a slim 28-27 margin before Boren extended the lead to four on a fast break shot from beyond the arc at 3:35.

U.T. Tyler's D'Onna Matthews scored on a floater with seven seconds left in the quarter as the Patriots went to the half leading 38-36.

Sully went to Boren again from long range at the 8:58 third quarter mark giving the Lady Lobos a 39-38 favor.

Sul Ross would hold down the lead until a midrange jumper by Dia Evans at 5:44 gave the visitors a 46-45 go ahead.

U.T. Tyler would maintain the advantage but by no more than four as they ended the third with a 56-53 lead.

A three-pointer by the Patriots' Samantha Odom put U.T.T. ahead 59-53 with 8:16 remaining in the game.

A three ball by Ellyn Avery (Grady/GHS) swung the lead back to the home team, 61-59 at 4:38.

U.T. Tyler's Makenzi May drained a three-point play for a 62-61 lead by the Patriots but it would mark the final time the visitors would hold the advantage.

A fast break layup by Miles at 3:28 gave Sully a 63-62 lead.

Miles would convert another layup at 1:55 to extend the Lady Lobo advantage by three, 67-64.

Obach would convert the final two points off of free throws at 1:08 before three missed jumpers by the visitors in the closing seconds solidified the 67-66 Sul Ross win.

Hearn posted 13 points in Thursday's victory and led the team with six boards. Avery and Miles bagged 11 points each.

As a team Sul Ross shot 23 of 49 from the floor against the third-ranked Patriots but finished with an impressive 14-25 shooting from outside the arc.

The Lady Lobos converted seven of nine free throws at 78 percent.

U.T. Tyler was held to 40 percent shooting from the field including an eight of 25 showing from three-point distance.
