Box Score 3769

ALPINE, Texas- Schreiner University's (2-5) Jared Thompson nailed a long two-point jumper in the final three-seconds as the visiting Mountaineers defeated Sul Ross (1-3), 63-61 and avenged a November 15 loss to the Lobos in the season opener.

Sully will begin American Southwest Conference play Thursday as U.T. Tyler comes to town for a 7:30 p.m. start.

C.J. Ross (Austin/Akins) broke the scoreless tie on a fast break lay up 14 seconds after the opening tip and an early Mountaineer turnover.

Following a 2-2 knot Schreiner converted a scoop shot and free throw and led 5-2 at the 17:04 mark.

A jumper in the paint by Caleb Thomasson (Ackerly/Sands) and two foul shots by Ross put the Lobos ahead by a slim 8-5 margin.

Sully then broke into double digits as Xavier Webb (Riverton, WY/RHS) rang in a three-point shot at 11:51 for an 11-7 Sul Ross advantage.

The Lobos held the lead for nearly a minute before the Mountaineers tied the game at 11 off a long range jumper by Thompson at the 10:47 post.

A series of ties and lead exchanges ensued down the stretch of the half before Ross sank a free throw to tie the game at 33 heading to intermission.

A jump shot in the lane by Damien Rhodriquez gave Sul Ross a brief 35-32 lead to begin the second half.

Schreiner tied the game on a lane shot by Phillip Kee on the next possession.

The Mountaineers then posted a 5-0 run capped by a three pointer by Nathan Robbins at the 16:28 mark for a 41-35 Schreiner lead.

The Lobos would never be able to recover the lead until a jumper in the paint by Thomasson at 3:54 broke a 55-55 tie.

Another series of knots and lead changes would culminate at the 33 second mark as Thomasson converted another spin around jumper from the lane to tie the contest at 61.

Thompson was able to fire off his heavily contested jumper in the closing seconds of regulation handing the Mountaineers the 63-61 win.

Thomasson and Ross led Lobo shooters with 12 and 11 points respectively.

Jacob Dawson (Amarillo/AHS) polled seven rebounds and seven assists while Rhodriquez tallied a team high four blocks in the effort.
